Spending on computer games. Cyprus reached €12.5 million, Poland nearly €1 billion.

Spending on computer games in Cyprus is estimated to have reached €12.51 million in 2025. This is €9.93 per capita – almost five times lower than the average for the markets included in the European ranking.

In Poland, the market was estimated at €990 million, ranking seventh in Europe. Cyprus, on the other hand, was among the smallest markets, despite the island's presence of over 400 companies involved in game development and publishing.

The rest of the article is below

The data comes from the first report by the European Audiovisual Observatory on consumer spending on video games. The Council of Europe institution analyzed European markets and how the way people buy games is changing.

According to the report, European consumers spent around 27.7 billion euros in 2025This represented approximately 17% of the estimated value of the global market.

Spending on computer games in Cyprus

The Cypriot consumer market was estimated at 12.51 million eurosOn a per capita basis, this amounted to 9.93 euros per year, compared to EUR 47.29 on average in the European comparison.

This average doesn't mean that every resident spent nearly €10 on games. It was obtained by dividing the market value by the number of residents, so people who don't buy games or add-ons are also included in the calculation.

According to the report's discussion, approximately 98% of expenditure included in the data for Cyprus attributed to mobile games. This is a very high share, but it doesn't mean that the same percentage of residents play exclusively on their phones, nor that consoles are not used on the island.

The data represents spending values attributed to individual platforms. It doesn't, by itself, reflect the number of players or all the ways they use games.

Poland close to a billion euros

In the same report, Polish consumers' spending on games was estimated at 990 million eurosPoland ranked seventh in Europe, behind Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.

The total value of the Polish market is significantly larger than that of Cyprus. However, when comparing these figures, it's important to remember that Poland has many times more inhabitants.

The difference between the totals doesn't tell us how much the average player spends in either country. Such a comparison would require data on the number of players and their spending, not just the value of the entire markets.

What do Europeans spend money on?

In the entire European ranking, the largest share of spending was attributed to mobile games — 40,3%Consoles accounted for 36.5% and PCs for 21.9%.

Purchasing a game isn't the only way to spend money these days. According to the observatory, microtransactions and additional digital content were responsible for 58.3% of European gaming spending in 2025.

These may include expansions, character items, or in-game currency. Subscriptions that provide access to select titles or services also constitute part of the cost.

Spending on computer games and the Cypriot industry

The small size of the local market may seem surprising, as Cyprus is home to numerous game development and publishing companies. However, these are two different things.

The observatory report estimates consumer spending in the local marketIn turn, the Cyprus Game Makers Association, or CYGMA, estimated the gaming revenue of companies operating on the island at approximately 3.2 billion euros in 2025.

These companies reach audiences worldwide. Their revenues, therefore, aren't solely dependent on how much Cypriots spend on gaming.

CYGMA identified 415 confirmed companies involved in game development and publishing. Their revenue figures are estimates based on available information, not the aggregate of all audited companies' financial statements.

Cyprus thus combines a relatively small consumer market with the presence of companies operating internationally. Both rankings show different aspects of the industry: one describes player spending, the other describes corporate activity.
