Why does mail to northern Cyprus go through Turkey? The Mystery of "Mersin 10"
A letter or parcel sent from abroad to the northern part of Cyprus may have the following added to the address: "Mersin 10, Türkiye"This doesn't mean the recipient lives in the Turkish city of Mersin. It's a way of routing international correspondence to the postal system operating in the north of the island.
The shipment is first sent to Turkey and then forwarded to Cyprus. If the sender enters only the name of the city and "Cyprus," the letter may be routed to the Cyprus Post system, which operates in areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.
The Republic of Cyprus uses the international postal system
Parcels to Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia, Ayia Napa, Protaras and other locations controlled by the Republic of Cyprus are addressed in the usual way.
The envelope or parcel should include:
- name and surname of the recipient,
- street and number of the building or apartment,
- four-digit postal code,
- town,
- name of the country: CYPRUS.
The Republic of Cyprus is a member of the Universal Postal Union, and the national operator is Cyprus Post. Therefore, a foreign postal operator can directly identify the destination country and forward the shipment to the Cypriot system.
In the north a different method of addressing is used
The administration operating in the north of the island is not recognized as a separate state by the international community outside of Turkey. It also does not have independent membership in the Universal Postal Union.
For this reason, international mail is not routed there through a separate, universally recognized national postal system. The address uses Turkey and the designation Mersin 10.
The note informs the Turkish Post that the shipment is not to remain in the city of Mersin, but should be forwarded to the northern part of Cyprus.
Is Mersin 10 the recipient's postal code?
No. "Mersin 10" does not replace the exact address of an apartment, hotel, or business. It is part of the route along which an international shipment is to be forwarded.
The address should still include:
- full details of the recipient,
- street name,
- building and apartment number,
- local postal code,
- name of the town,
- recipient's telephone number,
- designation Mersin 10 and Turkey.
In the north, five-digit codes starting with 99 are also used. The code must be obtained directly from the recipient, hotel or company to which the shipment is being sent.
It's not worth trying to create an address yourself based on a map. It's safest to ask the recipient to send you a full address template, exactly as you'd like it to appear on the package.
What might an example address look like?
The shipment diagram may look like this:
Street, building and apartment number
Postcode and city
Mersin 10
TÜRKİYE
Phone: +90…
This is merely a template to show the order of information. The exact address should always be confirmed with the recipient.
Providing a phone number is especially important for parcels and registered shipments. The local operator or courier may need to contact the recipient to arrange a pickup location or time.
Does every courier company use Mersin 10?
This should not be assumed. The method described applies primarily to traditional international mail. Private courier companies and online stores may use their own routes, warehouses, and address forms.
Before ordering, it is worth checking:
- whether the seller delivers to the north of Cyprus,
- what country name should be selected in the form,
- does the company accept the address "Mersin 10, Türkiye",
- whether the delivery includes customs duties and taxes,
- where you can pick up your parcel,
- whether a local phone number is required.
Some stores may not support this route at all, even if they offer shipping to Turkey or the Republic of Cyprus. Others may route your order to a collection point instead of to the specified address.
The shipment may take longer to travel
Correspondence sent through Mersin must undergo additional transportation and sorting steps. This may result in longer delivery times than shipments sent directly through the Cyprus Post system.
The deadline may be affected by, among other things:
- type of service selected,
- transport between Turkey and the island,
- customs controls,
- errors in the address,
- no phone number,
- holidays and days off,
- method of handing over the shipment to the local operator.
It is worth keeping the tracking number and checking it both in the system of the operator of the country of origin and in the system indicated by the carrier.

CHECK YOUR MAIL IN CYPRUSOne note determines the package route
"Mersin 10" is one of the most visible examples of how the island's division impacts daily life. The same address is geographically located in Cyprus, but in the international postal system, the shipment must be routed through Turkey.
Before sending a parcel, please confirm which side of the Green Line the recipient is on. Entering the incorrect country or omitting the Mersin 10 designation may result in delays, return of the parcel, or undeliverable delivery.
