Why do rental cars in Cyprus have red license plates?

Rental cars in Cyprus can be recognized even before they have a rental sticker. Unlike private cars, they have red license plates with black characters. This is a deliberate designation for vehicles provided by rental companies.

Red license plates allow police and other drivers to quickly identify rental cars. However, they don't necessarily mean that a tourist is behind the wheel. Such vehicles can also be driven by residents using long-term rentals or leasing.

Red plates immediately distinguish the car

Regular passenger cars registered in the Republic of Cyprus have white plates with black letters and numbers. On the left side, there is a blue stripe with the European Union symbol and the letter CY.

Rental vehicles are identified by a red background on the license plate. The marking is visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle.

This immediately identifies the vehicle as more than just a private car. This is important during roadside inspections, handling traffic incidents, and identifying a rental car.

Where did the letter Z come from?

Older Cypriot rental cars had registration numbers starting with the letter WITHYou can still see such vehicles on the roads today, especially in the fleets of smaller, local companies.

After the 2013 license plate system change, the letter Z was no longer required for new license plates. The red color remained the most important distinguishing feature.

Therefore, the popular belief that every rental car in Cyprus must have a registration plate starting with a Z is no longer true. New vehicles can have the usual three-letter, three-digit combination, but still receive red plates.

Board color Vehicle type
White Regular private car
Red Car intended for rental or leasing
Yellow Selected public transport vehicles, including taxis

Do red signs warn against tourists?

In practice, many Cypriot drivers interpret red license plates as a sign that the driver may not be familiar with local roads. Tourists may also find themselves driving on the left side for the first time.

However, this is not a formal warning sign and does not grant the rental car driver any special rights. They are subject to the same speed limits, parking rules, and right-of-way regulations as other road users.

Red plates also don't automatically mean less lenient treatment from the police. A fine for an offense may be forwarded to the rental company and then assigned to the person specified in the rental agreement. The company may also charge an administrative fee if the regulations specify one.

Red signs are located on both sides of the island.

Interestingly, red rental car license plates can also be found in northern Cyprus. However, there is a separate vehicle registration system in place there.

A similar color doesn't mean the car is registered under the same system or that its insurance is valid island-wide. The registration location can be inferred based on the arrangement of signs and markings on the license plate.

Cars registered in the Republic of Cyprus have the following marking on their registration plate: CY and the EU symbol. Plates issued in the north are not registration plates of the Republic of Cyprus or the European Union.

A red plate does not guarantee full insurance

The color of the plate confirms the category in which the vehicle is registered. It does not provide any information about the exact insurance coverage, deductible, or restrictions on how the vehicle can be used.

Before picking up your car, you should still check:

  • insurance coverage,
  • deposit amount,
  • deductible for damage,
  • rules regarding tires and windows,
  • Roadside assistance,
  • restrictions on dirt roads,
  • possibility of crossing the Green Line,
  • car and fuel return policy.

The red sign does not replace the rental agreement. The terms and conditions agreed upon during booking and the documents issued upon pickup remain paramount.

CHECK THE CARS

The plate helps you recognize a rented car

For tourists, red plates are primarily a quick way to check whether the car being picked up is registered as a rental vehicle. If the company provides a customer with a car with standard white plates, it's worth asking for clarification on its status and documentation.

For other drivers, however, it is information that the person driving the vehicle may not be familiar with local intersections, left-hand traffic or the unusual rules that apply on Cypriot roads.

The red plate isn't just a decorative element or a way to indicate the driver's nationality. It identifies the car's category and allows for immediate recognition of a rental vehicle.
