Cyprus Motorways: New Sections Planned for 2027

Cyprus's motorways are scheduled to be expanded with additional sections in the Nicosia, Limassol, and Paphos areas. The draft budget for 2027 includes funding for the Limassol-Saittas route, further expansion of the capital's bypass, and a connection between Paphos and Polis Chrysochous, among other projects.

Not all provisions mean construction will begin next year. Part of the funding was allocated for documentation and preparation, and the rest for construction. The budget is still awaiting parliamentary approval, but the implementation of individual sections will also depend on tenders and the completion of design procedures.

The rest of the article is below

From Limassol towards the mountains

For the residents of Limassol, one of the most important announcements is the next section of the route to Saittas. It is about 8 kilometers between Palodia and Monagri, to the Zygos Bridge.

The cost of this stage is estimated at approximately 80 million eurosThe documentation is at an advanced stage, and the tender is planned for late 2026. According to the presented schedule, construction would begin in 2027.

The first section, 3.6 kilometers long, opened in July 2025. It begins after the junction at the Spyros Kyprianou Sports Center in Polemidia and connects to the existing road network.

Ultimately, the entire Limassol–Saittas corridor is expected to be approximately 22.5 kilometersThe next stages are intended to improve access to mountain towns, both for residents and those planning to visit Troodos.

Cyprus Motorways: Major Planned Sections

Investments vary in scale and degree of preparation. The amounts below represent estimated costs for entire sections, not just expenditures projected for 2027.

ROAD INVESTMENTS

Which episodes are to be made?

Episode Length Estimated cost
Palodia–Monagri about 8 km 80 million euros
Anthoupolis–Anagyia 7 km 85 million euros + VAT
Denia–Astromeritis 19 km 138 million euros + VAT
Stroumpi–Polis Chrysochous 15 km 110 million euros + VAT

This list includes planned sections. It does not mean that all construction will begin simultaneously in 2027.

The next stage of the Nicosia bypass

The draft budget includes 19 million euros to prepare documentation and start work on the seven-kilometer Anthoupolis–Anagyia section.

The entire investment will cost approximately 85 million euros excluding VATConstruction will take an estimated three and a half years from the start of work. €12.3 million in funding from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility has also been approved for this phase.

The bypass is intended to connect the main highways leading to the capital and reduce the need to travel through city streets. Its expansion is being carried out in stages, so the opening of the next section will not yet mean the completion of the entire route.

From Denia to Astromeritis

The next project is The 19-kilometer connection between Denia and Astromeritis, valued at €138 million excluding VAT. Estimated completion time is four and a half years.

The section will connect with the existing Astromeritis–Evrychou route, providing drivers traveling between Nicosia and the Solea and Marathasa regions with a more direct connection.

This is also an important investment for people commuting from mountain towns to work, schools and medical facilities in the capital.

Paphos–Polis: new route and improvement of the old road

The tasks related to the new and existing Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road are planned in next year's budget 20.5 million euros.

Plans include the first phase of the new route, valued at over €90 million, and a further four-lane section, Stroumpi–Polis. The latter is expected to be 15 kilometers long and cost approximately €110 million excluding VAT.

In parallel, sections of the existing road will be improved. The value of this modernization contract is €3.5 million net of VAT.

When will drivers feel the change?

The draft budget outlines the direction of investment but does not constitute a timetable for the opening of new routes. Even sections scheduled to begin construction in 2027 will require further years of work.

For drivers, the most important thing will be the outcome of tenders and the signing of contracts with contractors. Only then will it be possible to more precisely determine the completion dates of the work.

The expansion is primarily intended to improve daily connections between cities and smaller towns. In the case of Limassol and Nicosia, easier access to the mountains will be particularly important, while in the Paphos region, a more efficient connection to Polis Chrysochous will be provided.
