Driving a rental car to northern Cyprus? Driving may void your insurance coverage.
A car rented in the Republic of Cyprus may, in some cases, be allowed to travel to the north of the island. However, this does not mean that the rental company agrees to this, nor does it mean that existing insurance will remain valid. The driver may be responsible for any damage or theft of the vehicle.
Before traveling, please review your rental agreement and obtain express consent from the rental company. Insurance purchased at the checkpoint may only cover liability for damages caused to other people. It does not necessarily cover the rental car, the driver, or its passengers.
The ride itself does not constitute the rental company's consent.
The Green Line is not a state border recognized by the Republic of Cyprus. However, it does separate the areas controlled by the Republic from those over which the government does not exercise effective control.
Passing through designated checkpoints is possible, but the driver of the rental car must comply with the terms of the contract concluded with the owner.
Some Cypriot rental companies completely prohibit driving north by car. Others may allow travel with prior notification and written permission. Some companies also require additional documentation or limit Green Line crossings to specific vehicles.
Even if the checkpoint staff allows passage, this does not automatically mean that the driver has not violated the rental agreement.
Your current insurance may no longer be valid
The biggest problem is the scope of insurance coverage. Standard insurance policies included with rental cars in the Republic of Cyprus are only valid in areas controlled by the Republic.
After driving north, the following may stop working:
- vehicle damage insurance,
- theft protection,
- limitation of driver liability,
- Roadside assistance,
- replacement car,
- cover towing and repair costs.
This means that in the event of a collision, breakdown, or theft, the rental company may charge the customer the full cost of the damage. Specific policies depend on the specific contract and cannot be assumed to be the same across all companies.
The official guide to driving in Cyprus reminds you that your car must have valid third party liability insurance and that in the event of a breakdown in your rental vehicle, you should contact the rental company directly. 0.d9531.doc
Insurance at the checkpoint is not always enough
At some vehicle checkpoints it is possible to purchase additional insurance valid on the north side of the Green Line.
Most often, however, this is basic liability coverage. Its purpose is to cover specific damages caused to third parties. Such coverage should not be assumed to cover:
- repair of a rental car,
- vehicle theft,
- breaking a window or damaging tires,
- roadside assistance and towing,
- damage suffered by the driver,
- own share resulting from the lease agreement.
Before purchasing, be sure to read the coverage terms, liability limits, and exclusions. A policy confirmation card alone doesn't guarantee full coverage for your vehicle.
Ask before picking up the car
It's best to inform the rental company of your planned trip before booking. Asking questions at the checkpoint may be too late.
The response should be provided in writing, for example, by email or in a contract. An employee's verbal assurances may be difficult to prove in the event of a dispute.
It's worth asking directly:
- is it allowed to cross the Green Line by car,
- whether written consent is required,
- where insurance is valid,
- whether the protection covers damage and theft of the car,
- does the rental company provide roadside assistance in the north,
- who will pay for the transport of the damaged car,
- whether the purchased liability limitation still applies after the trip.
Before booking, you can also compare the conditions and prices of car rentals available in Cyprus:
Check out car rental offers
Compare available cars, prices, and booking conditions. If you're planning a trip to the north of the island, confirm the terms directly with the rental company in advance.
COMPARE CARSWhat should I do if the rental company does not agree?
Failure to obtain permission does not mean that you must cancel your trip entirely. You can leave your car on the Cyprus-controlled side and cross the Green Line on foot at one of the designated pedestrian crossings.
On the other hand, you can take a taxi, local transport, or rent a second car. Another option is to join an organized tour, where the organizer handles all transportation and travel arrangements.

SEE TRIPSThe most important thing is the content of the contract
There's no single answer that applies to all rental companies. One company might allow the ride, another might require additional registration, and yet another might prohibit it entirely.
The rental agreement remains the most important document. Additional insurance purchased at the checkpoint does not remove the prohibition contained in the agreement and does not necessarily cover damage to the rental car.
Therefore, before setting off, you should obtain the car owner's consent, check the coverage of both policies, and ensure you understand who will bear the costs in the event of a collision, breakdown, or theft. Only then can you make an informed decision as to whether renting a car is worth the risk.
