Cheaper fuel in northern Cyprus. More and more drivers are crossing the Green Line.
Rising fuel prices are prompting more and more Greek Cypriots to fill up in the occupied north of the island. According to the above list, a liter of 95-octane gasoline costs around €1.38 there, and diesel costs around €1.36. In the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, average prices are €1.757 and €2.022, respectively.
Cypriot customs officials confirm the growing interest in such journeys. However, they remind everyone to check fuel transported across the Green Line. Refueling a vehicle and carrying additional fuel in canisters are subject to different conditions, and violations may result in the seizure of the fuel.
Cheaper fuel in northern Cyprus attracts drivers
Customs spokesman George Constantinou said on Saturday, October 10, that interest in refueling in the north increases every time fuel prices rise or drivers expect price increases.
At current rates, the difference is particularly noticeable for diesel fuel. Diesel fuel in the north costs approximately one-third less than the average in the Cypriot-controlled areas. 95-octane petrol is about one-fifth cheaper.
The prices quoted in the north are 77.12 Turkish liras per liter of 95 petrol and 76 liras per liter of dieselTheir equivalent in euros depends on the exchange rate and payment method.
How much can you save when refueling?
When purchasing 50 liters of 95 octane petrol, the difference between the indicated prices is approximately 18.85 eurosFor the same amount of diesel it is approximately 33.10 euros.
This is a simple fuel cost comparison. It doesn't take into account travel time, time spent walking, or any additional travel costs.

Price differences also between stations
In the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, the average price of 98 petrol is €1.812 per litre and of heating fuel €1.678.
Rates also vary between stations. In the above comparison, diesel costs from €1,939 in Larnaca to €2,126 in Limassol. 95-octane petrol costs from €1,669 in Larnaca to €1,829 at stations in Paphos and Nicosia.
These are the lowest and highest prices indicated, not averages for entire cities.
Fuel in a canister. What conditions apply?
Rules published by Customs provide conditions for fuel transported across the Green Line for personal use.
These include the non-commercial nature of the transport and a limit of €260 per person for the total value of exempt goods. For additional fuel, a portable container with a capacity of no more than 10 liters is specified.
The container must meet safety requirements. The authorities also check the occasional nature of the transport. Simply meeting the litre limit does not automatically mean that all conditions have been met.
If these rules are not followed, the fuel being transported may be confiscated. These cases should not be considered to be the same as every return trip with a car refueled in the north.
The services pay attention to quality control
Constantinou also noted that fuel quality monitoring in the north is not carried out in the same way as in the Republic of Cyprus.
This is a concern about the inspection system, not proof that the fuel at every station on the north side is of poor quality.
Lower prices, however, remain a strong incentive for drivers. With the current price differential, diesel car owners, in particular, may feel it every time they fill up.
