Limassol bus stops close to home. But that's not all.

Bus stops in Limassol are within a five-minute walk of 87.2% of residents in the Walkably area. In the coastal strip between the Old Port and Dasoudi, this figure is 100%, according to a study reported by the Cyprus Mail.

Proximity to a bus stop, however, doesn't guarantee frequent service, punctuality, or the ability to deliver passengers to their destination. This analysis focuses on access to bus stops, not the quality of service. It also doesn't determine whether Limassol needs a tram or improved bus service more.

Limassol Stops: The Coast with a Better Score

Walkably compared the accessibility of stops in the coastal strip from the Old Port to Dasoudi with the rest of the city area studied.

According to estimates used in the analysis, 2,762 people live in this strip. All are within a modeled five-minute walk to the nearest bus stop. In the rest of the area, the figure is 86.9%.

This is an important distinction: 2762 is the number of inhabitants of the coastal zone, while 86.9% determines the availability of stops outside it. These are not two values describing the same quantity.

For the entire analysis area, whose population was estimated at 103,812, the result is 87.2%. This figure should not be considered the current population of the entire Limassol district. The study uses Eurostat population data from 2021.

The distance along the streets was calculated, not the distance in a straight line.

Walkably founder Raian Pollock explained that they analyzed access on streets and paths. This is important because a short distance on a map doesn't always translate to an equally short distance on foot.

For example, buildings, fences, or pedestrian crossings may require a detour. Therefore, measuring the existing route network provides more information than a circle drawn around a bus stop.

However, the times provided are the result of a model. They do not guarantee that everyone will complete the route equally quickly.

The median time of two minutes on the coast represents the midpoint of the comparison, not the arithmetic mean. Outside the coastal zone, the median time is 2.7 minutes, or about two minutes and 42 seconds.

A short walk does not mean a comfortable journey

The analysis does not assess the frequency of services or the route. Therefore, it does not answer the question of whether the nearest bus stop provides a direct connection to work, school, or hospital.

It also doesn't take into account sidewalk width or road safety. A nearby bus stop may be more difficult to reach for a person with limited mobility or a parent with a stroller than the walking time alone would suggest.

For a passenger, the entire journey is important: the arrival, the waiting, the transfer, any transfers, and the final leg to the destination. A good result in the first of these elements does not determine the others.

Do the results support the tram?

The study comes amid discussions about the development of public transport, including the possibility of introducing a tram.

However, a stop accessibility map alone doesn't allow for selecting the best solution. Comparing a tram with an improved bus network also requires information on ridership, capacity, travel times, reliability, and costs.

We've previously written about the revival of trams in Limassol and Nicosia. The discussions described at the time didn't constitute a decision to begin construction.

For residents and tourists, the analysis results provide a useful guide to the location of bus stops. However, when choosing an apartment or accommodation, it's also worth checking the specific connection.

A bus stop five minutes from home will only be a real alternative to a car if the bus runs at the required times and provides a reasonable time to reach the destination.
