MALWA in Cyprus turns 25. From meetings to hundreds of events
MALWA in Cyprus will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026. The Cultural Association of Poles in Cyprus was officially registered on March 1, 2001. According to a report published on the occasion of the anniversary, the organization has hosted approximately 500 events: concerts, exhibitions, poetry readings, and cultural encounters.
It all began earlier, however, with small-scale initiatives within the Polish community in Nicosia. Participants prepared refreshments, invited guests, and helped with the organization. The need to meet and maintain ties with Poland gave rise to an association that has been bringing Polish culture to Cypriots for a quarter of a century.
How was MALWA created in Cyprus?
One of the most important figures in the history of the organization is Urszula Tekeli-Savvopoulou, a Polish woman from Świętochłowice, who has been living on the island for many years.
In an interview with the Ślązag portal, she recalled an event from 1987. Cypriot television was producing a program in which children from various countries presented Christmas customs. At her initiative, one of the Polish children spoke in Greek about Christmas Eve traditions.
This experience encouraged a broader presentation of Polish culture. Nicosia began organizing meetings with Polish guests, exhibitions of painting, photography, and folk art, and poetry readings.
Much depended on the personal involvement of participants. Everyone brought something to the communal table or helped with preparations. Over time, these initiatives led to the formation of a formal organization.
What does the name MALWA mean?
The name of the association combines five areas: Music, Artists, Literature, Exhibitions and ArtistryThis is how its development was recalled during the silver jubilee in 2026.
From the outset, MALWA in Cyprus had two main goals: first, to cultivate the language, culture, and customs of Poles. Second, to bring Poland closer to the island's inhabitants and representatives of other nationalities.
Therefore, bilingual poetry became an important part of the meetings. Urszula Tekeli-Savvopoulou translated Polish works into Greek, making them accessible to audiences who don't speak Polish.
Over 30 events in the first three years
The association quickly expanded its activities. A 2004 report by Małgorzata Chrysanthou, published by Polonia.org, noted over 30 events in the first three years.
Among the most memorable events was a meeting with the over 50-piece Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra and its guests. In addition to the larger events, smaller cultural evenings, May Day celebrations, and social gatherings were held.
The archival description also highlights the contribution Zbigniew Irzeński and his wife SophieThey supported the musical and organizational aspects of Polish community life. Preparing for the event meant not only the performance but also finding a venue, contacting sponsors, inviting the audience, and cleaning up afterward.
The difficulties did not end the business
The association's history also includes some difficult moments. In October 2020, Cypr24 reported on issues surrounding its formal status.
The chairwoman reported receiving a letter regarding the organization's deregistration. MALWA's authorities have taken steps to defend it, asking supporters for assistance.
The activity was continued later. October 20, 2021 The 20th anniversary celebrations, described by the Polish Embassy, took place in Nicosia. Representatives of Polish diplomacy and Cypriot authorities participated. After the official ceremony, the audience listened to a concert by Polish pianists.
Not just culture. Also helping others.
MALWA also engaged in social activities. An example was the campaign Seeds of Hope for Ukraine, carried out in 2023.
Vegetable seeds were collected during the events. Board representatives presented the collected donations to the Ukrainian ambassador to Cyprus on June 1st.
The Association also cooperates with the Polish Embassy on literary initiatives. September 5, 2026 Both organizations organized a National Reading at the Latin House in Nicosia. Participants jointly read Adam Mickiewicz's Dziady.
MALWA in Cyprus celebrates a quarter of a century
The anniversary meeting took place February 28, 2026 at the Latin House in NicosiaAfter years of showcasing Poland, the organization dedicated this evening to the culture of its second home.
Urszula Tekeli-Savvopoulou and Iza Theophilou presented tales related to Aphrodite. Zbigniew Irzeński provided Polish and Cypriot music.
Over the past 25 years, the Polish community on the island, its communication methods, and the opportunities for organizing events have evolved. However, the need to connect with people, language, and culture has remained.
MALWA in Cyprus is primarily comprised of individuals who found the time to prepare for yet another concert, exhibition, or literary evening. Thanks to their work, Polish culture has been reaching new audiences on the island for a quarter of a century.
