Bank account in Cyprus – how to open it and what documents should you prepare?

You can open a bank account in Cyprus as a resident or, in some cases, as an expatriate. However, the process isn't always the same, as each bank assesses the client independently and may request additional documentation.

The most important things are confirming your identity, residential address, source of income, and tax residency. The bank also verifies the purpose of opening the account and its intended use.

Do I need a Yellow Slip to open an account?

The Yellow Slip, which is the registration document for a European Union citizen living in Cyprus, is often required from people declaring permanent residence on the island.

However, this shouldn't be considered an absolute requirement for opening any account. Requirements vary by bank, account type, and customer status.

Bank of Cyprus specifies proof of identity, proof of address, and, where applicable, a foreign national's registration document on its new customer application form. The bank also has separate procedures for customers who do not reside in Cyprus.

This means that the absence of a Yellow Slip doesn't always automatically preclude you from opening an account. However, it may limit available offers or require additional documentation.

What documents are needed?

The required documentation may vary depending on the bank. Typically, you'll need to prepare:

  • valid ID card or passport,
  • confirmation of residential address,
  • Yellow Slip or other residence permit, if applicable,
  • a document confirming employment or business activity,
  • proof of income,
  • tax residency data,
  • tax identification number of the country of residence,
  • information about planned receipts and transactions on the account.

Eurobank Cyprus indicates that when opening an account, it verifies, among other things, the client's identity, income, contact details, and professional activity. The bank may also inquire about the purpose of the banking relationship and the expected transaction profile.

How to confirm your home address?

The bank may ask for one or more documents confirming your current address.

The most commonly accepted are:

  • electricity, water or internet bill,
  • lease agreement,
  • property ownership document,
  • official correspondence,
  • certificate issued by a public institution.

The document must be current and issued in the name of the person submitting the application. If the accounts are in the name of the landlord or spouse, the bank may request additional confirmation.

Why does the bank ask about the source of income?

Cypriot banks are required to comply with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations. Therefore, simply presenting a passport or ID card is usually not sufficient.

The bank may ask for:

  • employment contract,
  • last pay slips,
  • certificate from the employer,
  • statements from another account,
  • tax return,
  • documents confirming retirement,
  • documents relating to business activities,
  • explaining the origin of larger capital.

For a business account, the requirements are usually more extensive. The bank analyzes the company's ownership structure, operations, beneficial owners, and projected turnover.

Can an account be opened online?

Some banks allow you to start the process online. Bank of Cyprus offers digital registration for new customers who meet certain criteria, while Eurobank Cyprus allows you to submit a form and schedule an appointment to complete the process.

However, the possibility of opening an account completely remotely depends on:

  • country of permanent residence,
  • type of documents,
  • tax residence,
  • type of account,
  • customer verification result.

In some cases, a personal visit to a branch or a video call with a bank employee will still be necessary.

Can a non-resident open an account in Cyprus?

This may be possible, but the bank will conduct a more detailed analysis of the application.

A non-Cyprus resident may be asked to explain why they need a local account. Reasons include purchasing property, running a business, employment, regular visits to the island, or family ties.

The bank may also require documents from your country of residence, such as:

  • confirmation of address,
  • tax documents,
  • bank statements,
  • confirmation of employment,
  • information about the source of wealth.

Simply providing all documents does not guarantee opening an account. The bank may decline to establish a relationship without being obligated to offer every account type to every customer.

What is CRS?

CRS, or Common Reporting Standard, is an international system for the automatic exchange of information on financial accounts between tax administrations.

The bank determines the client's tax residence and collects their tax identification number. Account information can then be transferred to the tax authorities of the country where the client is tax resident.

Reporting may include, but is not limited to:

  • account owner details,
  • account number,
  • account balance or value,
  • some income paid into the account,
  • country of tax residence,
  • tax identification number.

Does the lack of a Cypriot TIC result in the account being reported to Poland?

It doesn't work that simply.

The bank does not base its reporting rules solely on whether a client has a Cypriot TIC number. Instead, the actual tax residence and the information provided in the tax return are decisive.

A person who remains a Polish tax resident may be subject to reporting to Poland even if they have an account and tax number in Cyprus. However, obtaining a Cypriot TIC does not automatically result in the loss of Polish tax residency.

Therefore, a local tax number should not be used as a way to avoid information exchange. Providing your bank with false tax residency information can lead to serious consequences.

Does having a Yellow Slip mean tax residency?

No. The Yellow Slip confirms the registration of an EU citizen's residence in Cyprus, but does not automatically determine tax residency.

Tax residence is determined on the basis of separate provisions, including length of stay, place of residence, professional activity and personal and economic ties.

So you can have a Yellow Slip and still be subject to tax in another country.

Is money safe in a Cypriot bank?

Deposits in banks covered by the Cypriot guarantee scheme are protected up to the equivalent of €100,000 per depositor per credit institution.

The limit covers the total value of eligible deposits held by an individual with a specific bank, including any accrued interest.

If a client has multiple accounts with the same bank, the limit is not calculated separately for each account. The protection applies to the total amount held with that institution.

What does opening an account look like step by step?

First, choose your bank and account type. It's worth comparing:

  • monthly fees,
  • debit card cost,
  • transfer fees,
  • availability of online banking,
  • number of ATMs,
  • cash withdrawal costs,
  • supported languages,
  • minimum revenue requirements.

Then you need to prepare your documents and submit your application online or schedule an appointment at a branch.

The bank will verify your identity, address, source of income, and tax residency. It may also request additional clarification or documentation.

Once the application is approved, the client receives an IBAN number, access to electronic banking and – depending on the offer selected – a debit card.

How long does it take to open an account?

Simple applications can be processed relatively quickly, especially if the client lives in Cyprus, is permanently employed and has a complete set of documents.

In more complex cases, the procedure may take longer. This applies particularly to:

  • non-residents,
  • entrepreneurs,
  • people with income from several countries,
  • company accounts,
  • clients with a complex asset structure.

The bank may suspend the procedure until the missing documents are presented or the origin of the funds is clarified.

Can a bank refuse to open an account?

Yes. The bank conducts an individual risk assessment and may refuse to open an account if it is unable to verify the client, the source of the funds, or the purpose of the account.

Refusal may also result from:

  • incomplete documents,
  • inconsistent information,
  • inability to determine tax residence,
  • unclear source of income,
  • international sanctions,
  • risk assessment conducted by the bank.

Therefore, before your visit, it is worth contacting the selected branch and asking for an up-to-date list of documents.

Personal account vs. business account

Opening a business account is usually more time-consuming than opening a regular personal account.

The bank may require, among other things:

  • company registration documents,
  • statute and articles of association,
  • data of directors and shareholders,
  • information about beneficial owners,
  • business plan,
  • agreements with contractors,
  • invoices or financial forecasts,
  • documents confirming the source of capital.

The scope of the check depends on the type of business, the countries with which the company cooperates, and the expected value of the transaction.

What is worth checking before choosing a bank?

You should not rely solely on the ability to open an account quickly.

For people living in Cyprus, the following may also be relevant:

  • the cost of maintaining an account,
  • quality of the mobile application,
  • availability of mobile payments,
  • SEPA transfer fees,
  • possibility of contact in English,
  • ease of data updating,
  • number of branches and ATMs,
  • conditions for issuing a credit card,
  • handling joint and corporate accounts.

Before signing the documents, it is worth reading the table of fees and the account regulations.

A bank account in Cyprus requires preparation

Opening a bank account in Cyprus doesn't have to be complicated, but the bank will carefully check the customer's identity, address, income and tax residency.

A Yellow Slip can be an important document for island residents, but it's not always strictly required in every situation. Similarly, a TIC number doesn't determine, on its own, which country information will be transferred to under the CRS.

The best solution is to contact your chosen bank in advance and obtain an up-to-date list of documents. This will reduce the number of branch visits and speed up application processing.
