Polish film with Cypriot participation. "Mato sens" is coming to theaters.

"It makes sense" This Polish comedy-drama brought together filmmakers from Poland and Cyprus. Directed by Paweł Podolski, the film stars Jędrzej Hycnar and Olga Kalicka. The production was co-produced by the Cypriot company Caretta Films, with Cypriot actors in the cast, and artists associated with the island were responsible for the music and makeup.

The film will be released in Polish cinemas. September 18, 2026, and a few days later it will be screened at the 51st Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. Although it is an official Polish-Cypriot co-production, an important point needs to be clarified: principal photography took place in Warsaw, not on the island. Cypriot involvement includes production, financing, cast, and crew.

What is “It Makes Sense” about?

The main character is Antoni Klepacki, played by Jędrzej Hycnar.

Everything changes when Olga, played by Olga Kalicka, appears.

First, he demolishes their workplace with a forklift. Later, he considers Antoni his best friend and begins to push the boundaries he has maintained for years.

He looks at her as if she were from another planet.

She sees him as a man who needs to be saved.

Besides her knack for getting into trouble, Olga has another special skill: she can bake bread. Over time, this becomes a crucial element in the relationship between the two characters.

The film is described as an almost romantic comedyIt combines humor with a story about loneliness, the need for closeness, and the difficulties of building relationships.

Cypriots also worked behind the camera

Cypriot participation is not limited to the presence of two actors.

The music for the film was composed by Stavros Makris, and she was responsible for the make-up Stefani PanagiThey both represent the Cypriot part of the production team.

Ernest Wilczyński is responsible for the cinematography, Mariusz Front is responsible for the production design, Hanka Podraza is responsible for the costumes, and Piotr Pastuszak is responsible for the sound. The script was written by Lynn Kucharczyk.

The main producer was Studio Produkcyjne ORKA. Co-producers included the Documentary and Feature Film Studio, Namovie, and the Cypriot company Caretta Films.

The project also received support from the Polish Film Institute.

Cyprus supported production with 75,000 euros

The film received funding under the Cypriot Minority Co-Production Support Programme.

Caretta Films was awarded the contract for its production. 75,000 eurosThis means that Cyprus was not added to the production merely as a symbolic partner.

The island participated in financing the film, and a local company handled the Cypriot portion of the production collaboration. Cypriot actors and crew members also joined the team.

These types of projects allow smaller film markets to participate in productions made outside their borders. They also provide local filmmakers with the opportunity to work on films destined for international distribution.

It's worth knowing
"Mato sens" is an official Polish-Cypriot co-production, but should not be presented as a film shot in Cyprus. Filming took place in Warsaw from November 15 to December 16, 2025. Cyprus participated in the production through Caretta Films, co-financing, and the participation of local filmmakers and actors.

The film originally had a different title

The project was developed under the title "A Little Sense", while in foreign industry materials it appeared as "A Bit of Meaning".

Back in 2022, Paweł Podolski and Lynn Kucharczyk presented it at the SFPitch event. The production was billed as a 90-minute comedy-drama about the spectacularly antisocial Antoni, who is forced to step outside his solitary bubble.

Ultimately, the film was titled "Makes Sense" and runs 92 minutes.

From September 18th in Polish cinemas

The cinema premiere is scheduled for September 18, 2026. The distributor is Forum Film Poland.

A few days later, the production will be screened at the 51st Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. "Ma to sens" has been selected for the Perspektywy Competition, which primarily showcases feature-length debuts and second films by directors.

The first festival screening will take place on September 21st. Screenings combined with meetings with the filmmakers are also planned for September 22nd and 23rd.

Paweł Podolski is a graduate of the Gdynia Film School's Directing Department. Before "Mato sens," he directed the short films "Dzieciak" and "Do Monsters Eat Kiwi?"

Cyprus is not in the frame, but it is in the end credits

A viewer watching the trailer may not recognize the Cypriot landscapes – and rightly so, as the film was shot primarily in Warsaw.

Cypriot involvement must be sought elsewhere.

Among the co-producers.

In music.

In characterization.

In the names of the actors.

And in the financing that helped bring the project to launch.

This is a good example showing that film cooperation between Poland and Cyprus does not have to be limited to bringing a Polish crew to sunny beaches.

Sometimes the island becomes part of a Polish film, even if it does not appear directly on screen.
