About 30 dead animals in Vavli. Residents raise alarm about poisoning.
Residents of Vavli, a small town in the mountainous part of Larnaca District, are reporting a suspected mass animal poisoning. According to reports provided to Cypriot media, approximately 30 dead animals—mostly cats and a stray dog—have been found in recent days. Residents are demanding police intervention to identify the perpetrator(s).
This is the second similar case reported in the town in two years. The police animal protection unit was notified, and the mayor of Lefkara announced a visit to Vavla with sanitary services. The reported death toll comes from local residents; available reports do not provide test results confirming the cause of death for all the animals.
Dead cats found near homes
In an interview with Philenews, Vavli resident Achilleas Leivadiotis described how five dead cats were found near his home. One of them was being cared for by his family, and the animal was being raised by their children.
The man also pointed to the death of a stray dog found near the cemetery, just outside the town center. He suspects that poison was left in the area, which also led to the deaths of the cats. This is his suspicion; no evidence has been presented to confirm the perpetrator's motive or method of operation.
Many residents regularly feed local cats, and some of the animals also visit their homes, so concerns arise for both strays and pets.
Residents ask for police action
According to Leivadiotis, his wife has written to the animal protection police. Residents expect the reports to be investigated, the circumstances surrounding the animals' deaths to be clarified, and those responsible to be identified.
Lefkara Mayor Sofoklis Sofokleous confirmed that he had received a report of approximately 30 dead animals, including a dog. He also announced the involvement of municipal sanitary services.
Some reports indicate around 30 cats and a dog, while others suggest a total of around 30 animals. The exact number requires confirmation.

Similar reports coming in 2024
In October 2024, residents of Vavla also raised the alarm about suspected mass poisoning of cats.
According to their accounts at the time, approximately 30 of the 50 cats they cared for had disappeared. Many were later found dead. However, this does not mean that all the missing animals were confirmed dead.
The recent reports have once again sparked concern in the town. Residents are expecting an effective response that will clarify the incident and ensure the safety of the remaining animals.

Leivadiotis admitted that he's now afraid to walk his dog. The death of the cat his family cared for has hit the children particularly hard.
At this stage, it is unknown what substance may have been used or whether all reported cases have the same cause. No one has been identified as responsible.
Residents are asking for an explanation and steps to prevent further animal deaths. Their accounts remain the basis for reports of suspected poisoning.
