New parking rules in Limassol. The first 30 minutes will be free.

Limassol is introducing a Smart Parking system with 2,211 spaces in the city center. Drivers will pay one euro per hour, but the first 30 minutes of parking will be free. If the vehicle remains parked longer, the fee will be charged from the beginning of the parking period.

The new rules are expected to take full effect in about a month. The system will operate as a pilot for the first six months. The city is also planning special arrangements for residents, employees, and students, as well as free street parking at night and on Sundays.

Smart Parking will have 2,211 spaces

The new system will provide a total of 2,211 parking spaces in central Limassol. This includes:

  • 1,495 street parking spaces,
  • 716 spaces in organized city parking lots.

The introduction of the new rules was preceded by nearly four months of discussions within the city council. Ultimately, the pricing policy received support from a vast majority of councilors.

Smart Parking isn't limited to installing new parking meters. The system utilizes sensors and solutions to monitor space occupancy and more effectively manage parking in the city center.

First 30 minutes free

The basic rate will be set at one euro per hour. The driver will not be charged for the first 30 minutes if they leave the location before the end of that period.

However, the rule that applies after the free half-hour parking period is important. The fee will then be charged from the moment the car is left, not just from the 31st minute.

This means the first half hour is free for short-term parking only. It will not be a free addition to any paid parking hour.

Parking spaces designated for people with disabilities will remain free, as will special parking spaces for parents with small children. Security personnel will also be posted at organized city parking lots.

In some places you will be able to stand for a maximum of one hour.

One of the main goals of the new system is to increase the availability of spaces in the busiest parts of Limassol.

Up to 100 on-street parking spaces, located in particularly attractive locations in the city center, will be limited to a maximum of 60 minutes. Parking longer than this will not be possible, even after paying an additional fee.

The solution is intended to help customers of shops, restaurants, service points, and offices. The city wants to reduce situations where one car occupies a parking space all day, preventing other drivers from using it.

Free parking at night and on Sundays

Street parking will be free daily from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. No fees will be charged on Sundays.

Different rules may apply at organized municipal parking lots equipped with barriers. Therefore, before leaving your car, it's worth checking the parking lot's signage and the information provided at the entrance.

The city is also planning special cards for those working downtown and using street parking spaces. A separate solution will be developed for residents using organized parking lots at night.

The adopted policy includes a €60 fee for a special parking permit. Detailed information regarding its validity period, eligible individuals, and application procedures will be provided in an official city announcement.

When will parking be free?
  • for the first 30 minutes, if the stop is not extended,
  • on the streets from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.,
  • on the streets all Sunday long,
  • in places for people with disabilities,
  • in special places for parents with small children.

Before leaving your car, please check the signage for a specific space or parking lot.

Up to 500 places for residents and students

Up to 500 spaces will be available for city centre residents, students and other eligible groups.

However, this doesn't mean that everyone living downtown will automatically receive a spot. The city has yet to publish the eligibility criteria, required documentation, and card issuance process.

It's possible that factors like residential address, lack of private parking at the property, and the actual need to park downtown daily will all play a role. Final rules haven't been announced yet.

Special parking for TEPAK students

A separate solution has been prepared for students of the Cyprus University of Technology, i.e. TEPAK.

Free parking for students will be established on Aiolou Street. Small buses will run from the parking lot to the city center, the cost of which will be covered by the Limassol Municipality.

Students living in the city center will be able to benefit from the same policies as permanent residents. City officials and the university are also considering additional incentives to encourage the use of buses, bicycles, and other alternative modes of transportation.

Parking is intended to limit car traffic

Smart Parking is part of Limassol's broader transportation policy. City officials have made no secret of the fact that the new fees are intended to discourage parking in the city center for extended periods.

Parking is intended to become a traffic management tool, not just another paid urban service. Daily commuters will be encouraged to use buses, bicycles, Park & Ride systems, or park their cars outside the city center.

The city hall itself has begun preparing incentives for its employees who decide to commute to work by bus or bike.

Limassol currently has 1,418 spaces across 23 municipal parking lots. Some of these are already equipped with barriers and sensors. Once the system is implemented, approximately three out of four spaces are expected to be monitored.

Full launch in about a month

Smart Parking is expected to be fully operational in about a month. Before then, the city should publish detailed information regarding payments, parking passes, rules for using parking spaces for residents, and the application process.

The system will operate on a pilot basis for the first six months. This will allow us to verify whether the adopted rates, time limits, and special permissions actually increase the availability of spaces at the center.

Drivers should therefore monitor further announcements from the Limassol Municipality. Until the system's official launch, not all new rules will necessarily apply to every parking lot and street covered by the project.
