Airport queues. CyBusy forecasts, Hermes warns
The free CyBusy service estimates the congestion at the Larnaca and Paphos terminals and suggests arrival times before your flight. However, Hermes Airports cautions against basing arrival times on unofficial forecasts. The tool does not measure actual queues or wait times.
The operator of both airports recommends arriving at least 2.5 hours before your scheduled departure, unless otherwise indicated by the carrier. The Hermes statement was added on October 19 to a previous Philenews publication describing the service.
How does CyBusy forecast queues at airports?
CyBusy uses departure schedules and a model that estimates passenger arrivals over the next 72 hours. The service's founder, Amit Meldassi, explains that the analysis takes into account overlapping waves of travelers arriving before different flights.
The tool is intended to help you assess whether the terminal will be quiet or crowded at a given time. However, it does not provide current conditions at check-in and security checkpoints, nor does it provide a time estimate for the time it will take to get to your gate.
A low congestion forecast does not guarantee that all formalities will be completed in a few minutes.
The flight schedule alone is not enough
Hermes Airports points out that the speed of service also depends on the number of open check-in desks and the staffing of passport control, security and baggage handling.
With a similar number of departures, waiting times may therefore vary. The operator warns that relying on an unofficial forecast may lead passengers to arrive too late and miss their flight.
Online check-in does not end the formalities
Departure time is not the deadline for arriving at the terminal. You must check in your luggage, pass required security checks, and arrive at the correct gate.
Online check-in allows you to complete some pre-travel activities, but passengers with suitcases must still check in before the counter closes. A separate deadline applies for boarding.
The extra time also includes walking from the parking lot or bus stop, and any transfers to the terminal. Detailed requirements should be checked directly with the carrier for your specific flight.
Forecast as an additional guide
CyBusy can help you understand expected traffic. However, it shouldn't be a reason to shorten the time recommended by the airline.
Before departure, it's worth checking your flight status and airline and airport announcements. Even if the model predicts a quiet time, check-in and gate closing times remain unchanged.
