The fish farm near Limassol is to be twice as large. It has 16 environmental protection requirements.

Temri Group Ltd plans to double the production capacity of its marine fish farm off the coast of Monagroulli in Limassol District from 1,000 to 2,000 tonnes per year. The project also involves increasing the number of breeding cages from 24 to 48. The installations are located in the Agios Georgios Alamanou area, east of the city.

The expansion received a positive environmental opinion, but with 16 conditions regarding the protection of marine nature. These include, among other things, locating new cages, inspecting nets, reducing lighting, and properly feeding the fish. This assessment does not mean that the farm already produces 2,000 tons per year or that all necessary expansion procedures have been completed.

A fish farm near Limassol plans to increase production

The farm farms sea bream and sea bass, also known as sea bass or sea bass. Its current permit allows for production of up to 1,000 tons of fish per year. The company has applied to increase this limit to 2,000 tons.

Doubling the farm's capacity requires additional offshore installations. The project involves adding 24 breeding cages to the existing ones and expanding their mounting system.

In the official register of the Department of the Environment, the date of completion of the assessment was indicated as July 13, 2026While the topic resurfaced in local media in October, the assessment itself is not a new decision made this month.

New cages further away from protected nature

One of the most important conditions is the expansion towards the south, so as to increase the distance of the new cages from the protected area and sensitive habitats.

Work must remain within the project's designated boundaries. Anchoring installations within the protected area should also be avoided.

The location is significant due to the natural value of the Agios Georgios Alamanou area. Protected wildlife, including the Mediterranean monk seal, utilize the surrounding waters. The development conditions are designed to minimize the risk of disturbing, injuring, or becoming entangled in the farm's structures.

Networks under control, especially after storms

The operator should regularly check the condition of the network and its mountings. These checks should be particularly thorough after extreme weather events that could damage the installations.

Requirements include preventing the escape of farmed fish, promptly repairing damage, and cleaning nets. These safeguards are also intended to reduce the risk of entanglement of birds and other protected animals.

A separate requirement is to limit nighttime lighting. Lighting needed for farm operations should not cause unnecessary disturbance to wildlife.

More fish means more responsibility

As production increases, feeding control will be important. Uneaten feed can end up on the bottom, so operators should adopt appropriate practices to minimize the accumulation of organic residues.

The conditions also cover waste management and spill prevention. Instances of injured or dead protected marine animals and birds must be reported to the appropriate authorities.

The impact of larger fish farms on the surrounding sea is the primary focus of the assessment. A positive assessment has been linked to specific protective measures, compliance with which will be crucial during the project's implementation.

The expansion remains a project

2,000 tonnes per year is the planned production capacity, not the confirmed current result of the farm. Completing the environmental assessment is one of the stages of the procedure.

Based on the documents described, it's not safe to assume that the farm has already doubled in size. The project assumes increased production and more cages, but its implementation must comply with required permits and environmental protection requirements.
