The access road to Paphos Airport needs improvement. The new road is unfinished, and the old one is awaiting work.
Getting to Paphos Airport has once again become the focus of attention from local authorities and parliamentarians. Traffic around the port is increasing, and the new road remains unfinished due to environmental concerns. Regional representatives are demanding urgent modernization of the existing road through Timi.
DIKO MP Chrysanthos Savvidis reports that preparations have begun for a study on power supply and lighting for the old road. A plan for its further modernization is also being developed. However, no date was given for the commencement or completion of the works. The regional authorities want improved access to accompany the planned expansion of the airport.
The new road remains unfinished
The new route was intended to provide more convenient access to the port and accommodate growing traffic demands. However, its completion still faces environmental challenges.
According to Philenews, the Department of the Environment and environmental organizations have raised concerns. Currently, there is no clear prospect of a quick resolution to the dispute and the completion of the project.
Therefore, local governments around the airport and regional representatives are once again focusing on the existing road. They want it improved without waiting for the new route to be resolved.
This two separate projectsModernizing the old road does not mean resuming work on the unfinished connection.
Access to Paphos Airport via Timi
The existing road connects the city area with the airport via the town of Timi. It is used by passengers, port workers, carriers, and residents of nearby towns.
Savvidis believes the route urgently needs modernization to cope with increased traffic. He also notes its importance for tourism: for many visitors, it's one of the first places they see upon arrival.
The MP vows to continue to press for faster preparations. The matter is being addressed by the Parliament's Transport, Communications, and Public Works Committee. According to Philenews, all five MPs representing the Paphos region are involved.
For years, there was no formal entry
Preparations for the modernization also revealed an administrative problem. As Savvidis recalls, it was not until 2025 that it was determined that the road would remain closed for decades. it was not formally registered as a public road.
Once its status was resolved, preparations began for further changes. Currently, these include power and lighting for the route, as well as a plan outlining the scope of further modernization.
Announcements of improvements have appeared before. We wrote about the planned lighting on CyprNews in August. However, recent statements show that local representatives are still demanding that preparations be moved to construction.
Modernization needed before port expansion
Savvidis wants the airport expansion to be accompanied by noticeable improvements to existing access. A larger airport means additional transportation needs that must be accommodated by both passengers and local residents.
For now Access to Paphos Airport does not change as a result of these announcementsNo announcement has been made about the commencement of work or new traffic restrictions. The next step should be to present the scope of work and a timeline that will allow drivers to assess when they will actually see improvements.
