The British base at Akrotiri in Cyprus will be used for another operation related to the Middle East conflict. An RAF Voyager refueling aircraft will support Saudi fighter jets intercepting drones and missiles fired by the Houthis from Yemen.

The operation is expected to begin in the coming days and initially last several weeks. The British government is presenting it as a "purely defensive" mission, but the air-to-air refueling will allow Saudi aircraft to remain in the area longer. No restrictions on residents or changes to traffic in the Akrotiri area have been announced.

Akrotiri base back in operational use

A single Voyager aircraft belonging to the British Royal Air Force will be deployed for the mission. The aircraft will operate from RAF Akrotiri, located near Limassol.

The decision followed an official request from Saudi Arabia for military assistance. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that he had accepted the request after consultations with the defense and foreign ministers.

The Voyager is not a combat aircraft designed to attack targets. Its primary role will be to transfer fuel to Saudi aircraft during flight. This will allow the fighters to conduct longer patrols without having to return to the airfield.

Britain says 'defensive only' mission

British Minister Luke Pollard emphasized that the support would be "purely defensive." According to the explanation provided, it primarily aims to enable Saudi fighter jets to intercept incoming drones and missiles.

Voyager itself is not expected to participate in bombing targets in Yemen. London also assures that the operation will be conducted in accordance with international humanitarian law.

However, the statement about the mission's defensive nature leaves questions about how the refueled aircraft will be used. British media have pointed out that the Saudi aircraft could also operate against missile launchers or facilities used to prepare attacks.

The UK government has not yet provided detailed rules for which flights can receive fuel from the British Voyager. It has only stated that the aid is intended to help repel attacks and stabilize the situation in the region.

Attacks on Riyadh and energy installations

The decision comes in response to intensifying Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian territory. Drones and ballistic missiles have been directed at cities including Riyadh and energy infrastructure near the Red Sea.

Saudi air defenses intercept some incoming targets, but the increasing frequency of attacks increases the need for long-term air patrols.

An additional problem is the situation near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is one of the most important routes for global trade, container shipping, and energy supplies.

The UK has warned that further escalation could disrupt shipping traffic and lead to further increases in transport costs and energy prices.

The operation is also intended to protect economic interests

Prime Minister Andy Burnham directly linked the decision to send the plane to Britain's economic and energy security.

London fears that attacks on Saudi Arabia and the closure or restriction of traffic on key sea routes could further increase the prices of oil, diesel and jet fuel.

The consequences would not be limited to the UK. Increases in transport and energy costs would also be felt in other European countries, including Cyprus.

What does the operation mean for the people of Cyprus?

At this stage, no disruptions have been announced for residents of Limassol or those travelling on roads passing through the British area of Akrotiri.

However, it is possible to increase the number of military operations conducted from the base. Residents of nearby towns may therefore see or hear military aircraft more frequently.

Akrotiri is not part of the Republic of Cyprus. It is part of the Sovereign Base Areas, or sovereign areas under British administration. This means that London can use the military base there without obtaining the consent of the Cypriot government for every single operation.

RAF Akrotiri has previously played a key role in British operations in the Middle East. Its location allows aircraft to be quickly directed towards the Eastern Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf.

This time, the British aircraft will not be conducting direct combat operations. However, it will provide support for longer sorties by Saudi fighters. This makes the base, located near Limassol, once again a factor in the ongoing conflict.
