Winter vacation in Cyprus. Lonely Planet recommends the island, but what are the prices like?

A winter vacation in Cyprus is among Lonely Planet's recommendations for those seeking off-season sun. The island was praised for its mild climate, historical sites, and diverse landscapes. However, a separate price comparison shows that certain purchases and services cost more in Paphos than in Tenerife or the Algarve.

A basket of eight products and services was priced at 98.02 British pounds in Paphos. However, this isn't the total cost of the trip. We also checked offers for stays departing from Poland available on CYPRNews. Among the winter options were seven-day trips with prices starting from 1,349 PLN displayed next to the offer.

Winter holiday in Cyprus recommended by Lonely Planet

In an article published on October 27, Lonely Planet presented ten European winter destinations with milder climates. Cyprus came in fifth. However, this is an editorial list of recommended destinations, not a ranking based on points.

The island's description highlights the flamingos that hibernate in Larnaca Salt Lake, the historical sites of Paphos, and the ancient city of Kourion. The Troodos Mountains, where snow can occur in winter, are also mentioned.

This is a great option for those who want to combine coastal walks with sightseeing and excursions into the island's interior. However, it's worth planning your off-season stay differently than your summer vacation—taking into account shorter days, rainfall, and limited opening hours at some establishments.

Paphos is more expensive than Tenerife and the Algarve

A separate study by Post Office Travel Money compared the prices of eight typical holiday purchases and services in 24 destinations around the world. Of the eight European resorts included, only Funchal, Madeira, was more expensive than Paphos.

The value of the basket in Paphos was approximately 12 percent higher than in Tenerife and about 19 percent higher than in the AlgarveCompared to Rhodes, the difference was just 27 pence.

What does price comparison include?

The basket includes coffee, local beer, soda, a glass of wine, mineral water from the store, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a three-course dinner for two with a bottle of wine.

Amounts are given in pounds sterling because the study was designed with British travelers in mind. Conversions were made using September exchange rates used by the report's author.

This list is a reference point for planning your expenses. It doesn't mean that every holiday in Paphos will be more expensive than a stay in Tenerife. The actual cost depends on the venues, shops, and vacation options you choose.

How much do winter stays from Poland cost?

CYPRNews also offers package holidays departing from Poland. Among the offers available on October 29th are seven-day trips to Paphos in December and January.

The price was displayed at the Theo Sunset Bay hotel 1349 PLN, and at Mayfair Gardens — 2028 PLNBoth offers departed from Poznań on December 5th. The first included breakfast, and the second was all-inclusive, so they are not identical packages.

What to check before booking?

When comparing trips, it's worth considering the meals and services included in the package. The shopping basket from the Post Office report shouldn't be automatically added to the price of your stay—some meals and drinks may already be included in the hotel's offer.

In winter it is also important room heating and availability of hotel amenitiesIf you're interested in a swimming pool, you'll need to confirm whether it will be open and heated on your departure date.

A milder climate doesn't preclude cool evenings, rain, or thunderstorms. It's worth checking the forecast before your trip, and checking winter opening hours before visiting an attraction.

Lonely Planet recommends exploring the island outside of peak summer months. However, it's worth giving yourself the freedom to change your plans: a sunny day can be spent walking and sightseeing, while a rainy day can be spent enjoying a museum or a quiet dinner at a taverna.
