A pier in Polis Chrysochous has been severely damaged. Residents are waiting for repairs.

Strong waves severely damaged the jetty in the Polis Chrysochous area. Elements of the supporting structure, wooden panels, and sections of the pavement were destroyed, and the end section of the structure is now unsafe and unusable. Access to the jetty has been physically blocked.

Residents are demanding information about when safety work and repairs to the structure will begin. The scope of the necessary work, its cost, and a timeline for restoring the bridge to safe use have not yet been publicly disclosed.

The waves damaged the pier's structure

According to Taxidromos24, the structure was damaged during strong sea swells and intense wave activity.

The jetty juts out into the open sea and is not protected by a breakwater. Therefore, during rough weather, large waves directly impact its supports, deck, and side safety elements.

The published photos show that the section leading out to the sea is still standing, but the rest of the structure is clearly damaged. Parts of the pavement are missing, and elements of the final platform have been displaced or completely torn off.

The entrance was closed with a metal fence secured with a chain and padlock.

The part protruding into the sea suffered the most damage.

According to a local news outlet, the damage is structural. The waves damaged supports, tore off wooden panels and planks, and ripped off parts of the pier.

The horizontal section at the end of the structure was particularly damaged. This is where the greatest surface defects and damage to the platform support elements are visible.

The condition of the jetty means that entering it could lead to a fall into the sea, injury from protruding elements or further damage to the weakened structure.

The physical barrier at the entrance is therefore important. Avoid bypassing it or stepping onto the jetty to take photos from a closer distance.

Residents want a specific schedule

The damage has sparked concern and protests from some residents, who are demanding information about planned actions and a start date for repair work.

The questions concern not only the security of the entrance itself, but also how long the bridge will remain unavailable and whether it will be possible to fully restore it.

Until the material was prepared, we did not find an official statement from the local authorities stating:

• technical assessment of the entire structure,
• the cost of necessary work,
• the entity responsible for the repair,
• date of commencement of works,
• planned date of reopening of the jetty.

It is also unknown whether only the wooden surface and damaged panels will need to be replaced, or whether repairs will also include supports and other load-bearing elements.

The west coast suffered severe weather

In late August, the western part of the island was hit by severe weather. Strong winds and rough seas caused damage to several coastal towns in the Paphos district.

The mayor of Polis, Chrysochous Yiotis Papachristofis, reported damage to greenhouses and photovoltaic installations. Strong winds also destroyed sunbeds and umbrellas on the beaches of Pomos, Argaka, and Agia Marina.

Not all damage is immediately visible after inclement weather. For structures submerged in water, a complete assessment may require inspection of supports, connections, and subsurface components.

Simply replacing missing planks is not enough if waves have compromised the stability of major parts of the pier.

Problems of this type have appeared before.

The jetties and former industrial structures on the coast in the Polis Chrysochous area have been requiring special attention for some time.

In January 2025, Cypriot media reported on the deteriorating condition of the Limni jetty, linked to the history of the local mine. They cited missing components, weakened supports, and additional damage caused by storms.

Based on the latest Taxidromos24 footage, however, it's impossible to definitively determine whether this is the exact same structure. The website only indicates that the damaged pier is located in the Polis Chrysochous area.

There is also no basis for concluding that the current damage is solely the result of years of neglect. Without a technical assessment, it is impossible to separate previous structural deterioration from damage caused by recent waves.

First the expertise, then the repair

Before work begins, a thorough technical inspection will be necessary. This should include not only any visible damage to the wooden surface, but also the condition of supports, joints, and components susceptible to corrosion.

Only such an assessment will determine whether the pier can be safely repaired, which parts need to be replaced, and how to protect the structure from further wave impacts.

It's also important to maintain an effective access barrier until the work is completed. A damaged bridge may attract visitors who want to see the damage or take photos, but the visible portion of the surface doesn't guarantee the stability of the remaining elements.

Residents now expect, above all, a specific answer: who is responsible for the repair, when the work will begin and whether the structure will be safely reopened.
