Flight Delayed? Don't Change Your Arrival Time at the Airport Without Checking the Rules
A flight delay doesn't automatically mean you can arrive at the airport later. Check-in and baggage drop-off may continue as originally scheduled. Passengers who voluntarily postpone departure from their home or hotel risk losing their ability to travel—even though the flight hasn't yet departed.
This also applies to travel to Cyprus and returns to Poland. Ryanair, LOT, and Wizz Air each have their own check-in and baggage drop-off times. It's important to distinguish between a late departure and instructions to change your arrival time. Some situations allow for a later arrival, but you shouldn't assume this.
Delayed flight and check-in. Two different times.
The plane was supposed to take off at 6:00 PM, but the airline sends a message that the estimated departure time is 9:00 PM. You might think you have three extra hours for the beach, dinner, or packing.
In the meantime, baggage drop may operate according to its original schedule. If it closes 40 minutes before scheduled departure, the cut-off time will be 5:20 PM.
The new departure time does not in itself confirm that the suitcase will be available for check-in later. Information about check-in is needed, not just the expected departure time.
Ryanair: time counted from the scheduled departure time
Ryanair states in its conditions of carriage that check-in desks close 40 minutes before the scheduled departure time, unless the passenger is informed otherwise.
The carrier also announced a change: From November 10, 2026, check-in and baggage drop-off at the airport will end 60 minutes before scheduled departure.
Therefore, passengers should check the rules in force on the day of travel. Mere notification of a delay does not constitute confirmation of an extension of time for completing formalities.
LOT: check the dates for your route
LOT also determines the check-in closing times for scheduled departure.Deadlines depend on the type of connection and airport.
In the published table, the carrier indicates, among other things, 40 minutes for short-haul flights to the Schengen area and 50 minutes for short-haul flights outside it. Longer times apply for some other connections.
LOT emphasizes that passengers must have their boarding pass and checked in baggage before check-in closes. Therefore, in the event of a delay, passengers should check the instructions for their specific reservation rather than recalculating the dates based on the new departure time.
Wizz Air: Important Exception for Hand Luggage
Wizz Air's instructions for delays of two to five hours require passengers to arrive on the original schedule if they need to drop off baggage, check in at the airport or validate their boarding pass.
However, there is an exception. Travelers from hand luggage only, after online check-in and with a valid boarding pass can arrive at least two hours before the new departure time and proceed directly to security check.
They still need to track their flight status and messages. This solution should not be automatically transferred to Ryanair, LOT, or any journey requiring desk service.
The plane is still standing, but you may not fly
Arriving before the actual takeoff does not guarantee acceptance for travel. If the required formalities have not been completed on time, the plane's presence at the airport may not make any difference.
It's important to distinguish between three stages: passenger check-in, bag drop, and boarding. Online check-in does not replace bag drop and does not exempt you from meeting the boarding gate deadline.
What to do before departing from Larnaca or Paphos?
Hermes Airports, the operator of both airports, recommends arriving at least two hours before your scheduled departure time. However, please check with your airline for specific departure times.
After receiving information about the delay:
- read the entire message, including check-in and baggage information;
- complete online check-in within the applicable deadline;
- check if you need to visit the stand;
- change arrival time only in accordance with carrier instructions;
- regularly check flight status and messages in the terminal;
- keep travel disruption messages.
The most important rule: a later start does not necessarily mean a later check-in. Before changing your departure time to the airport, check whether the airline actually allows you to arrive later.
