Motorcycle inspections are underway across Cyprus starting today. The campaign will last a week.
Police are launching a nationwide, week-long campaign targeting motorcycle and moped drivers. Special attention will be paid to helmets, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The campaign will last until Sunday, September 13. Police justify it with this year's accident statistics: from January 1 to September 3, 14 people traveling on motorcycles or mopeds died in road accidents – 12 motorcyclists, one moped driver, and one motorcycle passenger.
Seven-day checkups
Intensified operations will be carried out throughout the Republic of Cyprus. Police have announced checks aimed primarily at behaviors that increase the risk of serious and fatal accidents.
Officers are to pay particular attention to four groups of violations.
For years, the police have considered excessive speed, drunk driving and not wearing a helmet to be the most important threats on which the traffic police focus their preventive actions.
14 victims on motorcycles and mopeds
This year's statistics show why two-wheeler users are under particular scrutiny.
By September 3rd the following people had died:
- 12 motorcycle drivers,
- 1 moped driver,
- 1 motorcycle passenger.
In total, this gives 14 fatalities.
As recently as late August, available data showed a total of 27 road fatalities since the beginning of 2026. At that time, 14 people traveling on two wheels accounted for more than half of all fatalities. By comparison, 45 people died on Cypriot roads in all of 2025.
Police spokesman Byron Byronos emphasized in August that the exceptionally high proportion of motorcyclists among fatalities this year is a problem. Police also cited excessive speed, inattention, and distracted driving as common factors in the most serious incidents.
Without a helmet, the fine is 200 euros.
The obligation to wear a helmet applies to both the driver of a motorcycle or moped and the passenger.
According to the official table of penalties for riding without a helmet, the penalty is a fine of 200 eurosIf the same offense is repeated within three years, the penalty increases to 400 euro.
In the case of speeding, the penalty depends on the severity of the violation, while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can lead to much more serious consequences.

This is another nationwide police operation
The police regularly organize short campaigns focused on specific threats.
A similar campaign was conducted at the end of August, focusing on seat belts and proper child restraint. This time, the campaign will last much longer – a full seven days – and will also include motorcycles and mopeds.
This doesn't mean that police will only be checking for the listed offenses during the operation. The official announcement noted that officers will also respond to other dangerous and illegal behavior observed on the roads.
Increased patrols and checks are to be expected from Monday, September 7 to Sunday, September 13 inclusive.
