Dead cats in Chloraka. Greens raise alarm over suspected mass poisoning

Dead cats in Chloraka and dozens of missing animals — The Ecologists' Movement – Citizens' Cooperation is raising the alarm about a suspected mass poisoning near a local cemetery. According to the group's statement, 12 dead cats were found. The first reported incident occurred on October 20, 2026.

The Greens are demanding an explanation for the animals' deaths and an investigation into the allegations regarding the emergency services' response. They report that a formal written report was filed with the police on October 29th. The reported number of approximately 40 possible victims is a resident's estimate, not a confirmed total.

Dead Cats in Chloraka. It All Started with a Found Kitten

According to the report cited by the Green Party, on October 20th, a resident found a kitten in serious condition in her yard. The animal was taken to a veterinarian, but died the next day.

According to the information the woman allegedly received from a veterinarian, the cause was poisoning with a toxic substance, likely rodent poison. However, no test results were provided to confirm the type of poison or the cause of death for all the cats found.

The resident reportedly alerted the services on October 21st.

According to the report, the woman called the emergency number the day after finding the kitten and asked for contact with the Paphos Police Animal Protection Unit. She was told that without the evidence she had, no action could be taken.

The group itself emphasizes, however, that it has not been determined whether the interlocutor actually belonged to this unit. Therefore, this response cannot be attributed to a specific officer or team.

That same day, the resident reportedly sent an urgent report to the Animal Protection Police, Veterinary Services, and Chloraka Local Council, among others. She requested an inspection of the area, a search for suspicious baits, and the protection of other animals. She claims she has not received a response.

The Greens are asking about securing evidence

The group is demanding an investigation into whether the authorities responded appropriately to the reports. They are primarily asking for an inspection of the site, securing any poisoned baits, and collecting the dead animals for testing.

The Greens point out that delays could make it difficult to determine the cause of the cats' deaths. They also want an explanation for the actions of local authorities and the reasons for the reported lack of response to letters.

These are the allegations and questions raised by the group. In the publications we reviewed, we found no stance from the police, veterinary services, or local council regarding these specific accusations.

Volunteers take cats home

According to the Green Party, people caring for local cats have begun adopting some of the animals into their own homes to limit their exposure to potential threats. The resident also reportedly posted warning signs in the area.

The group reiterates its call for a strengthened animal protection police force. It wants a specialized, appropriately staffed team dedicated solely to animal protection cases.

He also announced that he would refer cases of suspected negligence to the appropriate supervisory authorities. He expects both the cause of death of the cats to be determined and the procedure for handling reports to be reviewed.

Similar concerns were previously raised in Vavli

In early October, CYPRNews reported on reports from Vavli in the Larnaca district. Residents reported around 30 dead animals and suspected poisoning.

This is a separate case. There is no basis to connect it with the events in Chloraka or to attribute a common perpetrator to both cases.

In Chloraka, it remains crucial to determine what killed the animals found and whether there is still a threat in the area. The Green Party's statement describes serious suspicions but does not replace the findings of the investigation or the results of toxicology tests.
