Student bus tickets: €5 per month, €30 per year

Student bus tickets will remain heavily subsidized for the 2026/27 school year. A monthly pass costs €5 and an annual pass costs €30. Additionally, students can use the buses free of charge until Friday, September 11th, to give parents time to obtain the required Motion cards.

From Monday, September 14th, travel will require a valid ticket. Annual travel requires a personalized Motion card, which must be issued upon presentation of a certificate from the school or a current student ID. For some students, travel remains completely free.

The state pays most of the price

The program results from a decision taken on August 27, 2025 and is valid until the end of August 2027.

The rates for students are:

• 5 euros – monthly ticket
• 30 euros - annual ticket

With a monthly ticket, the state pays extra 17 euro, which means its full value is 22 euros.

In the case of an annual ticket, the additional fee is as much as 190 euros per student, so for a full value of €220, the parent pays only €30. This is approximately 86% of the cost covered by the state.

Who can ride for free?

Children from large families and families with five children attending public secondary and technical schools are exempt from fees.

To obtain a free ticket, you need an appropriate document confirming your family status.

Ticket worth 0 euro is also issued:

• students in difficult financial circumstances,
• children from families receiving Guaranteed Minimum Income – EEE/GMI.

The student fare system also includes minors under the care of Social Welfare Services, even if they do not attend school. In their case, the cost of €5 or €30 is covered by the social services, while the state subsidy is financed by the Ministry of Transport.

Ticket-free until September 11th

The most important information at the beginning of the school year: In the first week, students can travel for free.

The transition period is valid until:

It is intended to enable families to easily obtain a personalized Motion card.

From:

Monday, September 14, 2026

Students must already have a valid ticket. The Ministry notes that the card issuance process began on September 1st and urges students not to leave it to the last minute.

How to get a Motion card?

To purchase an annual ticket you need: personalized Motion card.

When issuing it, the following must be presented:

• certificate of school attendance or
• current student ID.

Cyprus Public Transport allows you to top up your school card with a monthly ticket for €5 or an annual ticket for €30.

Ticket validity may vary depending on the operator's network. For example, OSEA indicates that its student ticket is valid within the geographic area where it was issued, so it's worth checking the specific carrier's rules when traveling outside of the usual region.
