The Cyprus Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms. The alert will go into effect on Thursday, September 17 at 9:00 PM and will remain in effect until Friday, September 18 at 5:00 PM.

The storms are expected to initially affect the western part of the island before moving into other regions. Locally, heavy rain, hail, and wind gusts up to force 8 on the Beaufort scale are possible.

First the western part of the island

According to meteorologists, the first stronger phenomena are expected to occur in western Cyprus. This means that worsening weather is expected primarily in the Paphos district and on the west coast.

In the coming hours, storms may also affect other regions. The warning applies to the entire island, but the phenomena will be localized. Rainfall and winds may not be equally intense in every location.

The situation can change quickly. Even within a single district, significant differences are possible between neighboring towns.

Up to 55 millimeters of rain per hour

During the strongest storms, rainfall intensity can range from 35 to 55 millimeters per hourThis amount of water could cause local flooding, especially in the lowest areas.

Problems can arise on roads where water accumulates after heavy rainfall. There is also a risk in tunnels, underpasses, depressions, and near dry riverbeds.

Drivers should adjust their speed to the conditions and avoid driving through deep water. Even if the road appears passable, it is difficult to assess the depth of the flooded section and the condition of the road surface.

Possible hail and very strong wind gusts

Meteorologists also warn of localized hail. Wind direction and strength can change dramatically during storms.

Gusts may reach high in places 8 degrees on the Beaufort scale, which corresponds to a speed of approximately 62–74 kilometers per hour. Such winds can break weaker branches, knock over light objects, and make driving difficult, especially for motorcyclists and drivers of tall vehicles.

Before the warning begins, it's a good idea to secure items left on balconies, terraces, and gardens. This includes lightweight furniture, flowerpots, umbrellas, and clothes dryers.

It is better not to leave cars under trees if strong wind gusts or hail are expected in the area.

Difficult road conditions

The greatest disruptions are expected on Thursday evening, overnight, and Friday morning. Heavy rain reduces visibility and lengthens braking distances.

Water may accumulate on roads, and strong gusts may move branches and other objects. Exercise particular caution on mountainous routes and roads that traverse low-lying terrain.

Do not drive into flooded roadways or attempt to cross swollen riverbeds. In cases of very heavy rainfall, it is better to stop in a safe place and wait for visibility to improve.

What does a yellow warning mean?

A yellow alert doesn't mean extreme weather will occur in every region. However, it does indicate that weather conditions could become dangerous and cause local disruptions.

Residents and tourists should monitor the Department of Meteorology for further announcements. The warning period may be extended if the storm system moves slower or faster than currently forecast.

The yellow warning is valid from 9:00 PM on Thursday, September 17th to 5:00 PM on Friday, September 18th.
