Yellow warning in Cyprus. Severe thunderstorms and possible hail

The Cyprus Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms. The alert is valid from 9:00 PM Sunday, September 27th to 6:00 AM Monday, September 28th.

The storms are expected to begin in the west and north of the island. Later, the storms may also affect other regions of Cyprus. Meteorologists are warning of heavy rain and the possibility of hail.

Yellow warning in Cyprus all night long

According to the report, isolated storms may be severe. Rainfall intensity is expected to range from 35 to 50 millimeters of rain per hour.

Such intense rainfall can quickly lead to water accumulating on roads, localized flooding, and a rapid rise in water levels in canals and dry riverbeds. Hail is also possible during the storm.

The situation in western and northern Cyprus requires the greatest caution, as this is where the weather is expected to deteriorate first. However, the warning is not limited to these regions. Thunderstorms may also affect other parts of the island in the coming hours.

Drivers should exercise extreme caution

People traveling in the evening and at night should prepare for sudden decreases in visibility and standing water on the road. During heavy rainfall, reduce speed and increase your distance from the vehicle in front.

Do not drive on flooded roads or attempt to drive through flooded riverbeds. Even seemingly shallow, fast-flowing water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

It is not advisable to leave cars in depressions, near storm drains or in areas that are regularly flooded during heavy rainfall.

How to prepare for night storms?

Residents should secure items on balconies and in gardens and check drains for obstructions. It is best to disconnect electrical appliances located in areas prone to flooding.

During a storm, avoid being outdoors, under isolated trees, or near metal structures. People living in areas prone to flooding should monitor official emergency services for updates.

The warning expires on Monday morning.

The yellow alert is in effect until 6:00 a.m. Monday. However, the end of the warning does not automatically mean an immediate improvement in the weather. The warning applies to the period when the risk of particularly intense weather events is highest.

Forecasts and warnings may be updated depending on the movement of storms. Before heading out in the morning, it's a good idea to double-check the weather and any road closures.
