There are jobs in Cyprus. The problem begins when you find a place to live.
Jobs in Cyprus remain available with very low unemployment, but high housing costs can make hiring difficult. An October analysis published by the Central Bank of Cyprus indicates that expensive housing and limited availability may discourage candidates, including those from abroad.
The unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2026 was 3.6%, and the number of employed persons reached 520,763. However, further economic development will depend not only on increasing employment, but also on qualifications, labour productivity and the ability to live in places where companies need people.
Working in Cyprus. Salary and housing must be financially compatible.
For someone considering a move, a job offer is just the beginning of the bill. Rent, bills, travel, and the amount left over after basic expenses also factor in.
Marios Polemidiotis, author of a study on the resilience and challenges of the Cypriot labor market, describes this connection. He points out that housing costs can limit employee mobility and make it difficult for companies to recruit staff.
The problem isn't limited to those coming to the island. An employee already living in Cyprus may also resign from a position in another city if the move or daily commute consumes a significant portion of the salary increase.
Therefore, a higher salary does not always mean more money at your disposal. It is worth comparing offers together with the costs of living in a specific location.
Low unemployment does not solve companies' problems
Data released by the central bank confirms the unemployment rate at 3.6% in the second quarter of 2026Employment remains high, with foreign workers playing a significant role.
The analysis shows that the labor market has remained resilient despite the pandemic, energy crisis, inflationary pressures and geopolitical uncertainty.
The influx of foreign workers has helped companies meet demand for services and expand their operations. However, if a candidate cannot find affordable accommodation, simply having a position available may not be enough.
This is especially important for positions that require relocation. Candidates must assess not only the employment conditions but also the potential for independent living in a new location.
Companies need people with the right qualifications
Demand for workers continued in sectors such as tourism, technology, professional and financial services, shipping, healthcare and education.
Employment growth has been fueled by foreign investment and the activities of international companies. However, this doesn't mean that every job seeker will find an offer that matches their experience and expectations.
Specific skills, language skills, and job location are all important factors. A low unemployment rate reflects the overall market situation, not the guaranteed capabilities of any individual candidate.
Work efficiency will become increasingly important
The potential for further employment growth by utilizing underutilized labor resources becomes more limited. Therefore, the analysis focuses on productivity, or the value created through work.
For companies, this means investing in team skills, technology, and better organization. Simply hiring more employees won't solve all development challenges.
For candidates, the practical conclusion remains simple: Working in Cyprus requires comparing the entire budget, not just the salary listed in the advertisementOnly by comparing your income with your housing and commuting expenses can you assess whether the change will actually be worthwhile.
