Weather in Cyprus: heavier rainfall, storms and possible hail from Wednesday

The weather in Cyprus will deteriorate from Wednesday afternoon, October 14th. A low pressure system from the Ionian Sea is moving southeastward, bringing rain and local thunderstorms. The deterioration will begin in the west and then spread to other regions of the island. Rainfall may be heavy or prolonged in some areas.

Already on Tuesday, October 13, isolated showers and local storms are expected, mainly in the mountains, north and interior of the island. The temperature will reach around 27–28°C in the lowlands and coast and 19°C in the highest parts of the mountainsRainy weather is expected to continue on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures gradually dropping below typical temperatures for this time of year.

Cyprus weather on Tuesday: more clouds and local rain

Tuesday will start with partly cloudy skies, with some areas becoming cloudier. Around noon and later, isolated showers and a local thunderstorm are expected, primarily:

  • in the mountains;
  • in the northern part of the island;
  • in inland regions.

Cloud cover will gradually increase by late afternoon. There will also be some light rain in places.

This doesn't mean, however, that rain will fall all day and in every location. Tuesday's forecast indicates primarily a localized nature of the phenomena.

Up to 28 degrees during the day, cooler in the mountains

The highest temperatures on Tuesday will be around:

  • 28°C in the interior of the island and on the south and east coasts;
  • 27°C on the west and north coasts;
  • 19°C in the highest parts of the mountains.

The wind will blow mainly from the southwest and northwest. Its force will generally be 3–4 on the Beaufort scale, and in the afternoon on the coast exposed to the wind periodically around 4 degrees.

Seas will generally be calm to slightly rough. These are forecast conditions for Tuesday—they should not be taken as a description of the entire upcoming stormy season.

Rain at night, mainly in the west and north

Tuesday night will be mostly cloudy. Occasional showers will gradually develop, especially in western and northern Cyprus.

In these regions, a local storm is also possible later in the day.

The temperature will drop to approximately 18°C inland, 21°C on the coast and 11°C in the highest parts of the mountainsThe wind will be light, around 3 on the Beaufort scale.

On Wednesday, the deterioration will begin from the west

On Wednesday, October 14, the sky will be mostly cloudy. Local rainfall and isolated thunderstorms are expected at times, especially in the western half of the island.

A more significant deterioration is forecast from the afternoon hours. Initially it will cover the west, and then other parts of Cyprus.

According to the Department of Meteorology, these storms may be intense in places or persist for extended periods. Hail is possible during storms, and winds may change direction and intensify significantly.

This is a significant change from Tuesday's scattered showers. Those planning Wednesday's outings or outdoor activities should check the latest forecast before heading out.

Rain and storms also on Thursday and Friday

On Thursday and Friday, October 15–16, mostly cloudy skies will remain. There will be occasional localized rainfall and isolated thunderstorms.

Also on these days, storms may be accompanied by hail and temporary increase in wind.

Temperatures will gradually decline through Friday. By the end of this period, they are expected to be below typical mid-October values. The morning report did not yet provide specific temperatures for individual regions for the entire three days.

It's worth following further announcements

Conditions can change quickly during local storms. When planning your trip, consider the possibility of heavier rain, reduced visibility, and sudden gusts of wind.

The forecast does not mean that equally intense phenomena will occur in every location. Their exact extent and timing will be further clarified in subsequent announcements.

The material is based on the morning forecast from October 13. The announcement of possible heavy rainfall should not be equated with the announcement of a specific meteorological warning level.
