Paphos or Larnaca? Where to Stay on Your First Cyprus Vacation

Paphos is a good choice for your first Cyprus vacation if you want to combine relaxation with exploring the ancient monuments and the western part of the island. Larnaca is especially suitable for a shorter stay. The beach, promenade, restaurants, and main attractions in the city center are all close together, making it easier to spend several days without a car.

The simplest answer to the question "Paphos or Larnaca?" is: For a short stay in the city and by the sea, choose Larnaca, and for a longer holiday combined with trips around western Cyprus, consider PaphosHowever, the final decision should depend on the location of your accommodation, available flights, and your sightseeing plans. The name of the city alone doesn't guarantee that you'll be within walking distance of the beach or bus stop.

Paphos or Larnaca – the most important differences

Both cities are located by the sea, have their own airports, and offer a wide range of accommodations. However, they offer different ways to spend your vacation.

Paphos is more closely associated with history, archaeology, and excursions in western Cyprus. Larnaca has a more urban feel, with the city center flowing seamlessly into the promenade and beach.

To put it simply, the differences are as follows:

  • Paphos – monuments, mosaics, port, Akamas, Polis and Latchi;
  • Larnaca – city beach, Foinikoudes, restaurants, walks and short stays without a car;
  • Paphos – a better base for exploring the western part of the island;
  • Larnaca – more convenient for people who want to limit their commute;
  • both cities – airport, public transport, beaches and a wide selection of accommodation.

Paphos: Monuments and Western Cyprus

Paphos' greatest asset lies in its harbor area. In Kato Paphos, you can visit the extensive archaeological park with its famous Roman mosaics. The area of Ancient Paphos was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.

The port, medieval castle, seaside promenade, restaurants, and bus stops are also nearby, making it easy to explore much of Kato Paphos on foot.

Paphos is also a good base for excursions to the western part of the island. From the city, you can set off towards the Akamas Peninsula, Polis Chrysochous, Latchi, the Avakas Gorge, Aphrodite's Rock, and mountain villages.

However, it's important to distinguish between visiting Paphos itself and exploring the entire region. Walking around the harbor and archaeological park can be done independently. For longer trips, check bus connections, rent a car, or take a tour.

When booking accommodation, it's worth paying special attention to Kato Paphos. Properties listed simply as "Paphos" may be located in various parts of the city, and sometimes even further afield. Before paying, be sure to check the actual distance to the port, beach, and nearest bus stop.

Larnaca: Beach and City Close Together

Larnaca has a more compact layout. Its most recognizable landmark is the Foinikoudes promenade, which runs along the city beach. Restaurants, cafés, and other services line the promenade.

The beach is a short walk from the Church of St. Lazarus, the medieval castle, and the streets of the old town. This arrangement is convenient for those who want to leave their luggage upon arrival and spend most of their stay without a car.

Also near the city are the Salt Lake and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque. Flamingos appear at the lake seasonally, primarily during the cooler months, so you can't assume they'll be there during every visit.

Those interested in beach holidays should compare two areas: Foinikoudes and Mackenzie. The former is located near the city center and the promenade. Mackenzie is closer to the airport and is known for its restaurants, beach clubs, and low-flying planes.

Where are the better beaches?

Comparing the beaches in Paphos and Larnaca depends on what kind of vacation you're looking for. In Larnaca, Foinikoudes Beach is part of the city's promenade. It's easily accessible, surrounded by dining options, and close to the historic center.

Paphos has small beaches in the tourist area, including Alykes and Vrysoudia. However, the coast is more varied, with many areas featuring rocks, concrete access points, and coves instead of long, sandy beaches.

If a specific type of beach is most important, the name of the town alone isn't enough. Before booking, it's worth viewing current photos, checking the beach type, and mapping out the route from the hotel.

It's also worth considering your entire vacation. Those who want to stroll around the city and relax by the water every day might feel more comfortable in the center of Larnaca. Those who want to alternate between beach time with sightseeing and excursions to the Akamas area might choose Paphos.

Paphos or Larnaca without a car?

For a short trip without a car, Larnaca is usually a simpler choice – provided you book accommodation near Foinikoudes, Mackenzie or the city centre.

Paphos is also a great place to spend a few days without a car. The best base for this would be Kato Paphos, from where you can walk to the port, archaeological park, restaurants, and some beaches.

The problems begin when the plan includes further attractions. Getting to Akamas, Polis, Latchi, or mountain villages requires advance planning. Not all destinations have direct and frequent bus connections.

Cyprus has city, intercity, and airport buses. Before booking accommodation, check the bus stop, schedule, and last connection time, especially if you have a late arrival.

The airport may determine the choice

The Republic of Cyprus has two international airports – in Larnaca and Paphos. Before choosing a city, it's worth checking where you can fly directly from the nearest Polish airport, how much the ticket costs, and what time the flight lands.

For short trips, flying directly into the city where you're staying can save time. Larnaca Airport is a few kilometers from the city center and Mackenzie Beach. Paphos Airport is located outside the city but is connected to the tourist area by bus.

Flying into Larnaca and staying overnight in Paphos, or the other way around, is possible. However, you'll need to factor in travel between cities, which will increase the cost and length of your trip. This is especially important for a three- or four-day stay.

What can you see in the area?

The choice between Paphos and Larnaca also influences which attractions will be closest.

From Paphos, it's easier to plan trips to Akamas, Latchi, Polis Chrysochous, Aphrodite's Rock, and the western part of the Troodos. The region offers a particularly good combination of historical sites, landscapes, and nature walks.

Larnaca offers more convenient access to Ayia Napa, Protaras, Cape Greco, Lefkara, and Nicosia. It can also be a more convenient starting point for a multi-regional trip, as it is more central to the southern and eastern parts of the island.

If you don't want to plan your own trips, you can take advantage of organized tours with Polish-speaking staff. Before purchasing, check the pickup location, program, duration, and price.

Paphos or Larnaca – which city to choose?

Choose Paphos, if you're looking for monuments, Roman mosaics, a port, and excursions around western Cyprus. This is a good destination for a week-long stay combining sightseeing and relaxation.

Choose LarnacaIf you're planning a short trip, want to do a lot of walking, and have a city beach on the promenade. The city will also be a convenient base for trips to the east of the island.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. When choosing between Paphos and Larnaca, the most important factors are the hotel's location, the airport, the length of your stay, and the planned attractions. Choosing the right accommodation in both cities will help you plan a successful first vacation in Cyprus.
