Nicosia is replacing 72,000 water meters. They will warn of leaks.
No more waiting for a meter reading to check your water consumption. EOA Nicosia has begun replacing 72,000 traditional meters with smart meters. Readings will be transmitted automatically every day, and residents will have access to the data online.
The system will also alert you to unusual consumption increases, which may indicate a hidden leak. However, to use the electronic monitoring and notifications, you must register on the organization's portal and provide your contact information.
Smart water meters first in three regions
Installation began on Monday, November 2, 2026The first phase covers the water network areas of Engomi, Latsia and Lakatamia.
The numbers provided by the organization refer to network service areas, not postal codes. This does not mean that all devices in these locations will be replaced at once—work will be carried out gradually.
| Town | Water supply network area |
|---|---|
| Engomi | 9 |
| Latsia | 21 |
| Lacatamia | 40 and 41 |
The schedule of the next stages and the areas covered by the work can be checked on smart water meter project websiteAccording to the EOA, the installation is expected to be completed by December 2027.
Daily reading instead of an employee visit
The new devices measure water flow using ultrasound. They then transmit the readings once a day to the EOA Nicosia platform via the NB-IoT network, which uses cellular connectivity.
This eliminates the need for a staff member to manually record the meter reading. Residents will be able to check their daily consumption through an online portal on their phone or computer.
Daily data upload does not provide a live view of your usage. However, it will allow you to notice changes faster than the current reading taken every two months.
The key benefit is the early detection of irregularities. If consumption significantly deviates from typical levels for a given property, the organization will be able to notify the customer. This alert will allow them to check the installation before receiving their next bill.
Increased consumption alone doesn't necessarily indicate a leak. The notification will be a sign that a leak has occurred in your home, not a confirmation that it needs to be checked.
What do I need to do to receive notifications?
The condition for using electronic services is to link your water bill to your account on the EOA portal and provide a telephone number for notifications.
To register you need: recipient number or water meter number and mobile phone numberThe organization also announces that detailed instructions will be included with the next bill.
What will the exchange look like?
The work will be performed by authorized crews with project IDs. The old water meter will be removed, and a new one will be installed in the same location.
Before dismantling, workers will record the final reading of the existing device. The new meter will start from scratch. This does not mean that previous use is cancelled. — its settlement will be based on the recorded indication.
If you have any doubts about someone presenting themselves as an installer, please contact EOA Nicosia and confirm their authorisation.
Less water loss and more control over your bills
Meter data is intended to assist both consumers and the water management organization. A more accurate picture of consumption should facilitate the identification of losses and the planning of network operations.
The project is co-financed by the European Union under the programme THALIA 2021–2027For residents, the practical change will primarily involve easier monitoring of consumption and advance notification that it's worth checking the installation.
