Mobile social care in Limassol. Aid to reach homes

A social worker, nurse, or caregiver will be visiting Limassol residents in need of support. President Nikos Christodoulides announced the creation of a Mobile Social Care Unit, which will be a pilot project to assist the elderly and other residents requiring care directly in their homes.

The announced scope includes basic nursing care, medication monitoring, assistance with benefit applications and daily activities such as shopping, meal preparation and hygiene. The date of the first visits and the method for reporting those in need of help have not yet been announced.

The rest of the article is below

Mobile social care will start from Limassol

The president announced the initiative on Monday, October 12, 2026, during the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Adult Centre in Limassol.

The unit will be established in collaboration with this facility and relevant state and local institutions. It will provide coordinated support tailored to the specific situation of each resident.

The basic premise is simple: help should reach people who, due to age, health condition or limited mobility, have difficulty using services independently.

The pilot will be conducted in Limassol and its effectiveness will be assessed before the program is potentially expanded to other regions of Cyprus.

A social worker will help with the formalities

One member of the team will be a social worker. Their role will be to identify the resident's needs, assess living conditions, and determine what support is appropriate.

Information on available benefits and services, as well as assistance in preparing and submitting applications, was also announced.

For someone who does not use the internet freely, has difficulty completing documents or does not know which office to contact, such support can make it easier to obtain help.

The visit should therefore cover both current needs and referring the resident to appropriate institutions.

Nursing care and contact with a doctor

The person responsible for nursing care is expected to carry out basic health checks and monitor medication intake.

If necessary, contact with the resident's personal physician will also be provided. This will allow for reporting of any difficulties noted and coordination of further care.

The announcement does not yet specify a detailed list of activities to be performed or the frequency of visits. Nor does it outline procedures for situations where a resident requires more specialized assistance.

The mobile unit is intended to provide social and care support. It is not intended to replace emergency medical services.

Shopping, meals and daily hygiene

The caregiver is responsible for assisting with activities that are difficult for some elderly or dependent people on a daily basis.

The announced scope includes:

  • assistance with maintaining personal hygiene;
  • support with purchases;
  • preparing or delivering a meal;
  • conversation and emotional support;
  • drawing attention to problems requiring further assistance.

The program will also address the resident's loneliness and mental health. The visit will provide an opportunity for conversation and identification of needs that may not be evident in documents or during a brief contact with the office.

Employees must respect the privacy of the person being cared for, explain the actions taken and take their views into account.

Cooperation with local services

The mobile team will work with Social Services, city social services, district social workers, the Adult Center, and personal physicians.

The goal is to combine various forms of assistance. Residents may simultaneously need care, assistance with formalities, and improved housing conditions.

The mayor also cited the institution of district social workers and the "Red Button" pilot program to support those in need. These are separate solutions designed to bring social services closer to residents.

When and how will it be possible to register a person in need?

This is the most important question for families, caregivers and single residents. The published announcement does not yet present the application procedure.

The exact pilot area, eligibility criteria, number of participants, and frequency of visits were not specified. Nor was it specified whether there would be a fee for using the service.

For Polish residents of Limassol, access to the program and the ability to communicate with the team in languages other than Greek will also be important. These details have not yet been announced.

For now, we know the scope of assistance and where the pilot will begin. Information about registration and the date of the first visits should be included in future announcements from the organizers.
