Polish producer trio Komodo also used Cyprus as a launchpad for a major musical project. In 2019, they shot the music video for "Is This Love," a dance version of one of Whitesnake's most famous songs, on the island.
Press materials from the premiere period broadly identified the filming location as the Larnaca area. However, the music video itself also allows for the recognition of distinctive locations. Ayia Napa areaOne shot features a white seaside chapel and the rocky coastline typical of this part of eastern Cyprus.
Komodo recorded "Is This Love" in Cyprus
The Komodo version of “Is This Love” premiered on March 28, 2019.
The Polish producers took a 1987 Whitesnake ballad and transformed it into a danceable, club-ready track. They once again enlisted American vocalist Michael Shynes to collaborate.
An extensive feature music video was created for the single, and Cyprus was chosen as the location.
Early previews published before the premiere stated that filming was taking place in the Larnaca area. However, when you look closely at the finished footage, you can also see Ayia Napa and its landmarks.
Ayia Napa appears in characteristic frames
It is the ability to recognize specific places that makes the clip particularly interesting from the perspective of people living in Cyprus.
In one scene, the characters appear at a white seaside chapel. In the background, the open sea and a rocky coastline can be seen.
This is a landscape typical of Ayia Napa and Agia Thekla area, located on the east coast of the island.
For most foreign viewers, it's simply a striking Mediterranean backdrop.
For the people of Cyprus – a place that can be recognized.
It is details like these that make watching Polish music videos shot on the island years later become a little game of finding familiar locations.
Cyprus starred in a cinematic love story
The creators did not prepare a classic holiday clip.
"Is This Love" tells a love story with romance, conflict, and twists and turns. Pre-release materials described it as a classic love story in the style of an American movie.
Cyprus therefore serves as a real film set.
The sea, coastal roads, buildings, and landmarks in the eastern part of the island are not presented as tourist attractions. They become the space in which the characters' stories unfold.
The main character also comes from Cyprus.
The music video's Cypriot connection doesn't end with the location.
She played one of the main characters Helena Panayi, an artist from Cyprus.
The clip also featured Andreas Prastitis, Kristina Koval and Doros Panayides.
Thanks to this, the island provided the production with more than just location. Some of the cast also had ties to Cyprus.
The first music video featuring the Komodo members
“Is This Love” was also important for the band itself.
According to materials published at the premiere, this was the first music video in which the Komodo members themselves appeared in front of the camera.
Previously, the production trio had remained primarily on the other side of their musical projects.
Cyprus thus became the venue for yet another debut.
After the huge success came the classic Whitesnake
Komodo previously gained massive popularity with their dance version of "(I Just) Died In Your Arms."
The new interpretation of the Cutting Crew hit reached high positions on Polish radio charts, and the music video gained tens of millions of views.
Following this success, producers began reviewing more classic recordings.
The choice fell on "Is This Love" by Whitesnake.
This new version was created with the permission of the original authors, David Coverdale and John Sykes.
Millions of viewers saw the Cypriot locations
The official music video for “Is This Love” remains available on Komodo.
The material exceeded 34 million views.
This means that scenes filmed in Cyprus – including the characteristic locations of the eastern part of the island – were seen by millions of people around the world.
For the residents of Ayia Napa, the clip has another dimension.
A place passed during a trip or a drive along the coast has become a fragment of Polish musical production.
Ayia Napa in a Polish music video
The more such clips we find, the more interesting the musical map of Cyprus becomes.
Margaret filmed around Paphos. KOMBII used the west coast and the area around Aphrodite's Rock. 4Dreamers appeared in Limassol. Natalia Nykiel chose the stark landscape of a salt lake.
In "Is This Love" Komodo can be recognized eastern Cyprus and the Ayia Napa region.
This is further proof that the island has been appearing in Polish music videos much more often than one might think.
The material was developed based on the official Komodo music video, ESKA materials regarding the making of the clip and its cast, and the identification of Cypriot locations visible in the material.
