Ferry disaster off Kyrenia coast. Death toll rises to 21, seven still missing.

The death toll from the Filo Jet ferry disaster off the coast of Kyrenia, northern Cyprus, has risen to 21. Another body was recovered during the search on Monday, October 5th. The fate of seven people remains unknown.

The disaster occurred on August 30, shortly after the vessel departed from Kyrenia Harbor. There were 267 people on board, 239 of whom were rescued. The search for the remaining passengers has continued for over a month.

Another body found

The Turkish Cypriot administration announced Monday's discovery in a statement published by local media in the evening.

The procedure to identify the person has been initiated. The statement did not provide their name or details about where the body was found.

Authorities in the northern part of the island announced that search operations would continue. They also extended their condolences to the families of the victims.

Three bodies found within days

Monday's discovery was the latest in recent days. Two bodies had previously been found in the crash area: one on Saturday, October 3, and the other on Sunday, October 4.

These discoveries left 20 dead and eight missing. The discovery of another body on Monday raised the number of confirmed victims to 21 and reduced the number of missing persons to seven.

DNA identification has begun for the bodies found over the weekend. Families are still awaiting information that will help determine the fate of their loved ones.

The ferry capsized after leaving Kyrenia

The Filo Jet was operating from Kyrenia to Taşucu, Turkey. According to reports following the disaster, the vessel began taking on water and capsized shortly after leaving port.

There were 259 passengers and eight crew members on board. Coast Guard units, helicopters, and nearby ships and boats were dispatched to the rescue operation.

A total of 239 people were rescued. The latest tally—21 fatalities and seven missing—includes all 267 participants on the voyage.

Monday's announcement addresses the progress of the search. It does not contain any new findings regarding the cause of the crash or liability for the accident.
