Thomas Mann returns to Germany

"Fatherland" takes place in the summer of 1949. Thomas Mann, German writer and Nobel Prize winner in Literature, returns to his homeland after sixteen years in exile.

Accompanied by his daughter Erika, an actress and writer, they travel across war-torn Germany in a black Buick, from Frankfurt under American influence to Weimar under Soviet control.

Return confronts the writer with questions about a divided country and conflicts within his own family. The film weaves a story about a father-daughter relationship with themes of identity, memory, and responsibility.

Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler in the main roles

Sandra Hüller plays Erika Mann, and Hanns Zischler plays her father. The cast also includes August Diehl, Anna Madeley, and Devid Striesow.

"Fatherland" runs 82 minutes. Pantheon classifies the production as a historical and biographical drama.

For Polish viewers, the language version is crucial: a Polish director doesn't necessarily mean dialogue in Polish. The cinema offers German and Greek subtitles, so before booking, it's worth making sure this version suits everyone attending.
