Red button for suppliers in Cyprus. Minister proposes alarm

A red button for delivery drivers in Cyprus would allow for quick notification of police in the event of an attack. This solution was proposed by Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris to companies operating delivery platforms. The idea is a response to attacks on food delivery drivers.

The system has not yet been launched. Its implementation requires company approval and technical preparation, and no launch date has been announced. The minister emphasized that faster police intervention also depends on how quickly the victim reports the threat. cna.org.cy

How would the red button for suppliers work?

The minister presented the proposal on Thursday, October 8, during a meeting with journalists. He had previously met with representatives of companies operating delivery platforms.

The premise is simple: a delivery person in distress presses an emergency button, and the police receive a notification and can dispatch help.

However, no technical details were provided. It's unclear whether this will be a feature within the app, a separate device, or some other solution. It also hasn't been announced what information officers will receive or whether the alarm will automatically transmit their location.

For now, this is a proposal, not a working service. Therefore, it cannot be assumed that suppliers already have access to such a tool.

Ministry's proposal

Red button - what do we already know?

  • It is intended to quickly alert the police in the event of an attack.
  • Implementation requires the consent of the companies operating the delivery platforms.
  • No launch date has been announced.
  • The technical details of the system have not yet been presented.

Attacks on suppliers in Cyprus

The proposal comes amid a spate of attacks on food delivery workers. We've previously reported on such incidents on CyprNews, including in our article about the overnight attacks in Limassol.

The minister emphasized that it's impossible to ensure a police presence in every location. Therefore, the ministry is looking for ways to shorten the time between an assault and officers receiving a report.

The button would facilitate calling for help in times of emergency. However, no guaranteed arrival time for the patrol was provided. The proposed solution remains aimed at announcing a rapid response.

The Minister points to robbery as the motive

Kostas Fytiris said that after discussions with companies, attention was also drawn to independent suppliers who carry larger amounts of money.

In his opinion, many attacks may be robbery-related rather than racist. However, this is the minister's assessment, not a finding regarding each attack. The motive for a specific attack requires an examination of the circumstances of the case.

This distinction is important when describing subsequent incidents. The mere fact that the victim is a supplier does not determine the cause of the attack or the perpetrators' connections.

Questions about crime and drugs

Journalists also asked the minister about possible links between the attack and drug trafficking. Fytiris replied that this thread was being investigated. He also mentioned numerous arrests and the dismantling of criminal groups.

The minister spoke about the possibility that some suppliers may be exploited by such groups. However, he did not provide detailed evidence regarding specific individuals or their connection to specific attacks.

There is therefore no basis for attributing such connections to an entire professional group. The statement concerned possible cases being investigated by the services.

When will the new security feature be available?

There's no date yet for the implementation of the red button for delivery drivers. It's also unclear which companies will accept the proposal or whether the solution will extend to independent couriers.

The next step should be to agree on the terms of cooperation with the platforms and how alerts will be forwarded to the police. Only after this information is presented will it be possible to assess who will have access to the system and how to use it.
